Coast Guard: ‘Praying and hoping’ as dozens of kids remain missing in Texas floods (video)

In the wake of devastating floods in Texas, the Coast Guard is leading a complex and urgent rescue mission as dozens of children remain missing. Lieutenant Ian Harper and Assistant Police Scott Ruskin spoke with reporters at the Coast Guard Air Station in Corpus Christi about the ongoing efforts to locate 23 young girls and their families affected by the catastrophic storm.

The Coast Guard is primarily deploying helicopter assets, specifically the MH-65 Dolphin, to conduct maritime search and rescue operations. They are working alongside various agencies, including the Army and the Texas Department of Public Safety, to maximize their chances of finding survivors. The gravity of the situation is underscored by the reports of hundreds of successful rescues, yet the search for the missing girls continues to pose significant challenges.

Harper noted that while there is a strong community desire to assist, civilian interference can complicate rescue operations. He emphasized the importance of maintaining clear communication and ensuring everyone’s safety, advising civilians to stay away from floodwaters, which can be extremely dangerous.

As the search unfolds, questions remain about the possible scenarios for the missing girls. Harper acknowledged the difficulty of predicting outcomes but expressed hope that survivors may be found clinging to trees or in other safe havens. The Coast Guard, along with its partners, is committed to providing the best possible chance for those still unaccounted for.

Rescue stories emerging from the operation highlight the emotional weight of the situation. Many people rescued have expressed profound gratitude, with one mother joyfully reuniting with her daughter after a harrowing ordeal. The Coast Guard is receiving calls for help primarily through organized triage efforts, with significant numbers of individuals needing assistance from various locations, including campsites where many children were gathered.

Despite the overwhelming challenges faced by rescue teams, the community remains hopeful. As Lieutenant Harper stated, “We are praying and hoping” for the safe return of those missing. The collective effort of the Coast Guard and local agencies continues as they strive to reunite families and provide support in this time of crisis. The search for the missing girls underscores the resilience and determination of those involved in the rescue mission, as they navigate the treacherous conditions and work tirelessly to bring loved ones home.
