Noem puts Newsom on notice after SURGE in assaults against ICE: ‘We’re looking at you’ (video)

In a striking escalation of violence against federal immigration enforcement, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has reported an alarming 830% increase in assaults on U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers. This surge comes amid a backdrop of heightened tensions surrounding immigration policies and the actions of various political figures, particularly California Governor Gavin Newsom, who has drawn criticism from some lawmakers for his stance on immigration.

DHS officials, including South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem, have publicly accused Democratic politicians, particularly Newsom, of fostering an environment that encourages violence against law enforcement. In a recent statement, Noem directed her remarks at Newsom, saying, “Our brave law enforcement are facing an 830% increase in assaults against them. Politicians across the country, regardless of political stripe, must condemn this. Gavin Newsom, we’re looking at you.”

The remarks from Noem follow a series of violent incidents targeting immigration enforcement officers. Most notably, the FBI has captured Benjamin Song, a former Marine Corps reservist, accused of participating in an ambush attack on ICE officers at a Texas detention facility on July 4. Song faces multiple charges, including three counts of attempted murder of federal officers, after allegedly firing an AR-15 style rifle at officers. This incident is just one of several recent attacks that have raised alarms about the safety of federal agents.

Former President Donald Trump weighed in on the issue, suggesting that “very stupid people on the left” are being financed to carry out these attacks. He cited the use of military-style weapons and tactical gear by suspects involved in such violence as indicative of the serious threat facing law enforcement.

In addition to the violence, the political climate surrounding immigration has become increasingly contentious. Critics have pointed to actions by some lawmakers, such as a California congresswoman who shared the business cards of ICE employees with activist groups, resulting in one officer being attacked. This incident exemplifies the growing hostility toward immigration enforcement and the dangers that officers face in the line of duty.

As the Biden administration grapples with immigration policy, recent statistics reveal a significant drop in border encounters, with apprehensions at historic lows. In June, total encounters across all border sectors were reported at 25,000, with the number of apprehensions at just over 8,000. This decline, noted by officials, suggests a shift in operational control at the southern border, even as violent incidents against ICE officers continue to rise.

The current situation highlights the complex interplay between immigration enforcement, political rhetoric, and public safety. As assaults on law enforcement officers increase, the call for a unified stance against violence has never been more urgent. Lawmakers from all sides are urged to condemn these attacks and prioritize the safety of those tasked with upholding the law.

In light of these developments, it remains clear that the discourse around immigration and law enforcement is not only a matter of policy but also one of public safety and respect for the rule of law. As tensions continue to mount, the responsibility lies with elected officials to ensure that the safety of law enforcement personnel is protected, and that the violence against them is unequivocally condemned.
