Gen. Jack Keane: ‘We’re in a much better position’ in dealing with Putin (video)

General Jack Keane, a prominent four-star general and a seasoned expert on national security, recently shared his insights on the evolving situation between the United States and Russia concerning the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. In a discussion that highlighted the strategic maneuvers of President Biden, Keane expressed optimism about the United States’ position in dealing with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Keane commended President Biden’s recent decisions to bolster NATO’s military contributions, with an increase to 5% that many considered unlikely. This move, according to Keane, is crucial in strengthening the alliance’s collective defense posture. He noted that Biden’s efforts to persuade European partners to acquire military equipment from the U.S. to support Ukraine reflect a decisive shift in strategy that could reshape the dynamics of the conflict.

The general addressed concerns about whether Biden would continue to support Ukraine amid pressures to pivot away from military aid. Keane asserted that Putin had seriously miscalculated the resolve of the U.S. and its allies. He emphasized that Biden’s unwavering commitment to Ukraine is not just about immediate battlefield support but also about reducing the financial burden on American taxpayers for future military aid.

Keane pointed out that arms supplied to Ukraine are still flowing from previous administrations, and recent orders for artillery and missile systems demonstrate a continuity of support. The deployment of Patriot missile batteries, essential for countering Russian drone and missile attacks, signifies a critical enhancement of Ukraine’s defensive capabilities.

Looking ahead, Keane mentioned the importance of crippling sanctions against Russia, indicating that these measures are set to become more stringent in the coming weeks. He underscored that while sanctions play a role, the battlefield outcomes remain paramount for Putin. The general highlighted that Putin has historically managed to circumvent sanctions, and thus, their effectiveness is often measured against military developments.

Keane also analyzed Putin’s strategy of targeting urban areas in Ukraine, which he believes aims to demoralize the Ukrainian populace and pressure President Volodymyr Zelensky’s government into concessions. However, he noted that recent polls show a strong desire among Ukrainians to continue fighting rather than negotiate terms that favor Putin.

In conclusion, Keane expressed confidence that the U.S. is in a much stronger position to engage with Russia. He believes that the current tactical decisions made by the Biden administration not only support Ukraine’s defense but also enhance the potential for future negotiations. The general’s insights reflect a broader understanding of the geopolitical landscape and the critical role of military and economic strategies in shaping the outcome of the ongoing conflict.
