In a disturbing turn of events, a former Army soldier has confessed to participating in the gruesome murder and dismemberment of a friend, revealing chilling details during a police interrogation. The interrogation video, recently released, shows David Degro calmly recounting the events leading to the death of 25-year-old Matthew Mclofflin, a veteran originally from West Virginia. Mclofflin went missing on July 26 in New Mexico, with his family reporting him missing days later, on July 31.
Mclofflin had been living with Degro and another soldier, Rainor Joiner, both of whom were alleged Army deserters with warrants out for their arrest. While Mclofflin’s military status remains unclear, he was described as a veteran by law enforcement. The investigation into Mclofflin’s disappearance quickly turned to suspicion of his roommates, who were reportedly evasive and uncooperative.
In a shocking statement, Degro admitted that he was present during the murder, which he claimed was motivated by a dispute over Mclofflin’s alleged drug habit. He revealed that Joiner had been plotting the killing, asserting that he felt compelled to assist out of fear for his own safety. Degro described the moment of the murder, claiming that Joiner shot Mclofflin twice—first with an AR-15 and then with a handgun—before executing him with a final shot to the head.
The interrogation revealed Degro’s inner turmoil as he recounted how he attempted to dissuade Joiner from killing Mclofflin on several occasions. However, he ultimately succumbed to Joiner’s threats, which included warnings that he would be killed if he did not participate. Degro stated, “He told me, ‘You’re going to help me with this. You’re going to help me with this. You’re not going to tell anyone or I will kill you.’”
After the murder, Degro described how he helped Joiner dismember Mclofflin’s body, using tools such as a hacksaw and a sledgehammer. The dismembered remains were reportedly disposed of at multiple locations in New Mexico, raising the horror of the crime. Degro claimed that he was coerced into assisting with the body disposal and that Joiner had threatened him repeatedly to ensure his silence.
As the investigation continued, law enforcement expressed skepticism towards Degro’s claims, noting the contradictions in his account and the disturbing calmness with which he narrated the events. Degro has since been charged with first-degree murder, conspiracy, and tampering with evidence, while Joiner faces similar charges. Joiner allegedly confessed to law enforcement, stating, “I did it. I don’t f-word regret it.”
The case has drawn significant media attention, highlighting the tragic end of a life once filled with promise. Mclofflin’s family described him as someone who had been struggling with personal issues but was deeply loved. As the legal proceedings unfold, both Degro and Joiner remain in custody, with their trial dates set for the coming months. The chilling nature of this case serves as a stark reminder of the potential darkness that can lurk beneath the surface of human relationships.
