The phone rang just as I was settling in for the night. Lee. A kid from my old running club. I haven’t seen him in years.

He said he was in Canada, so why is he suddenly back in Hull and asking to meet up? And why now, when everything is finally starting to settle down? I tried to act casual about it, but Maria was watching me. She always sees right through me.
I was making tea, trying to figure out what to do with my face, and she just knew something was off. She didn’t say anything, but that silence was louder than any question she could have asked. The whole mess with Theo is supposed to be over. Tyrone finally told the truth, and Summer’s getting out of prison.
But Todd’s been circling me like a hawk, going on and on about his phone and the missing CCTV. He thinks I had something to do with it. He keeps bringing up the skip near my work, as if I’d be stupid enough to dump evidence there. I’ve told him a hundred times I didn’t do it.
He doesn’t believe me. Carla gave me some odd jobs to do at the office. Her desk drawers were jamming, so I went over to fix them. It was just a simple job, but Sarah was there.
We talked. We laughed. And according to someone, the blinds were lowered. I don’t know why that’s anyone’s business.
Now my own brother is looking at me sideways, wondering if something’s going on between me and Sarah again. There’s nothing going on. We were just talking, for crying out loud. Meanwhile, Sam’s been acting strange.
He had some exam at school and seemed all worked up. I tried to talk to him, but he just walked away from me. He looked scared. More scared than a kid should be about a maths test.
Something’s wrong with that boy, and I can’t shake the feeling it has something to do with what happened. Everyone’s got questions. They’re all watching me. Kit, the copper, he’s got his own theories.
He was in the pub today, staring at me over his hot pot, making little comments about how clever I might be. He thinks I’m behind it all. He said he’s got a hunch. He said I’m cleverer than I look.
I just laughed it off. I told him if he’s got evidence, he should arrest me. He doesn’t have any. He can’t prove anything.
But the way he looked at me when I walked out of the pub… he knows something. Or he thinks he knows something. With a copper, sometimes that’s enough. And now Lee is back.
Lee, who told the police nothing happened between him and Megan. Now he’s here, in Hull, and he wants to see me. Why? What does he know?
Is he here to threaten me? Or does he have information that could help me? I keep checking my phone, hoping for a message. He said he’d meet me.
He said he was here. I just need to figure out what he’s playing at before he ruins everything I’ve worked to rebuild. I’m not letting anyone take me down. Not Kit, not Todd, not Lee.
I’ve been through too much. I’ve lost too much. This time, I’m not going to be the one who ends up paying for someone else’s crimes.
I just need to find out what Lee knows before anyone else does.
