Katy Perry revealed a crucial tanning mistake she made while filming her California Gurls music video in 2010.
The singer, 38 – who also discussed her quirky doll eye talent in the interview – shared that she had to ‘spend so much extra money on color-grading’ the iconic video while doing Vogue’s Life in Looks segment on Friday.
‘Funny story behind this is that I look super tan here, right? Rarely do I get spray tans, and typically you’re supposed to get them the night before. Well, I just didn’t have time. So, I got them the day of my music video,’ she recalled about her look from the video.

The Santa Barbara born star also gave her fans some useful advice: ‘Kids, just a little tip: fake tans, night before.’
The American Idol judge also shared an inside scoop on one of her costumes – a pair of iridescent blue shorts and a cupcake bra.
She revealed that the shorts were made from Diesel jeans ‘that were cut and bedazzled.’
The video sees Perry in a number of colorful outfits as she frolics in a Candyland reminiscent land along with rapper Snoop Dogg, 51.
The Harleys In Hawaii hitmaker released California Gurls in 2010. The song was the lead single from her third studio album, Teenage Dream.
Elsewhere in the Vogue segment, Perry revealed the secret reason behind her viral ‘doll eye’ talent, joking that it’s to watch her glam squad.
The pop star disclosed that she likes to keep an eye on her hair and makeup teams to make sure that her look is on point.
The unsettling skill is akin to a long-lasting wink, allowing Perry to keep one eye open at all times.
‘I do this pose called “doll eye,”‘ explained the Dark Horse songstress. ‘I can close one eye at a time and still like maintain all function.
‘I’ve sat in a hair and make-up chair for 15 years. If they’re putting eyeshadow on this eye and someone is putting my hair up into a french twist, I want to give notes in real-time.’
The hitmaker’s quirky talent went viral last year when a TikTok clip showed her struggling to open one of her eyes in the middle of a performance, leading many to quip that she was a glitching robot.
Poking fun at the fan reaction, Perry shared a clip of the moment with a witty headline that promoted her Las Vegas residency: ‘When you see new 2023 PLAY dates.’
In the caption, she wrote: ‘Welcoming all my #flatearthers #spaceisfakers #birdsarentrealers #skyisntbluers to come see my broken doll eye party trick IRL in Vegas next year!
‘The show’s setlist is a fun ride through memory lane going all the way back to 2008, a time when we weren’t all frozen by the paranoia of our own echo chambers!
Perry’s career shows no signs of slowing down as the fifth leg of her Las Vegas residency is set to continue through August.
Her over-the-top spectacle at Resorts World is called Play, and the hitmaker recently likened the whimsical show to taking mushrooms.
‘You don’t have to take mushrooms to feel like you’re on mushrooms when you watch this show,’ she told Rolling Stone. ‘Believe me.’
The Dark Horse singer went on to declare that she is far from retirement and said that she’s ‘got a couple of aces up her sleeve.’
‘It’s not like I’m heading into retirement,’ she said. ‘Trust, sweetheart, she’s got a couple of aces still up her sleeve.’
