Coronation Street fans gobsmacked by Carl star's unrecognisable role in superhero film

Fans of “Coronation Street” are in for a surprise as they discover the unexpected Hollywood connection of one of the show’s notorious characters. Jonathan Howard, who plays the troublesome Carl Webster, has left viewers stunned with his role in a major superhero film that premiered years ago.

Joining the ITV soap last year, Jonathan’s character, Carl, is the estranged brother of Kevin (Michael Le Vell) and Debbie (Sue Devaney). His storyline has been nothing short of dramatic, featuring a scandalous 𝒶𝒻𝒻𝒶𝒾𝓇 with his sister-in-law Abi Webster (Sally Carman), a hit-and-run incident involving Tyrone Dobbs (Alan Halsall), and even manipulating his mother, who suffers from dementia, into taking the blame for a multi-vehicle crash.

Recently, Carl learned that Tyrone was the one who accidentally hit him earlier this year, leading to a swift hospital visit courtesy of Ronnie Bailey (Vinta Morgan), according to reports from the Liverpool Echo.

Before stepping into the role of Carl Webster, Jonathan had an impressive career, appearing in notable films and TV shows like “World War Z” and “Downton Abbey.” However, it’s his part in the 2013 blockbuster “Thor: The Dark World” that has fans buzzing. In this Marvel film, he portrayed Ian Boothby alongside stars like Chris Hemsworth and Idris Elba, contributing to a box office success that grossed over ÂŁ500 million.

Upon learning about Jonathan’s Marvel connection, fans took to social media in disbelief. One viewer exclaimed, “I was today years old when I found out Carl Webster is canon in the MCU… this crossover!” Another commented, “Wtaf that’s CARL!?” while a third lamented, “How did I never realize that was him?????? I’ve seen Thor: The Dark World so many times!!!!!”

Despite his impressive achievements, Jonathan has faced his share of challenges in the industry. In a candid conversation with the Mirror, he opened up about the emotional toll of constant rejection and periods of unemployment. “At one point in my mid-30s, I was auditioning constantly and getting rejected three times a week, which was tough,” he shared. “When you do 200 self-tapes and it’s a constant no, you start to question your worth as an actor.”

Jonathan’s journey is a testament to resilience, as he navigated the highs and lows of his career, reminding us all of the passion that drives actors to persevere.

“Coronation Street” continues to air Monday through Friday at 8:30 PM on ITV1 and ITVX. What other surprising connections might the world of soap operas hold?
