Tragedy struck during a Fourth of July getaway as 18-year-old Nolan Wells went missing after a boating accident near Horn Island. Newly released audio reveals the desperate cries for help from his friends as their vessel began to sink, raising questions about the circumstances surrounding this heartbreaking incident.
Wells and a group of friends had traveled from the Mississippi mainland to celebrate the holiday but faced a dire situation when their boat malfunctioned around 4 p. m. The operator could be heard pleading for assistance in the audio obtained by NBC News.
âHey, weâre at the west tip of Horn, and our bilge pump stopped working. Weâre going. Weâre sinking.
Can you all please come?â they said, emphasizing their urgent need for help.

After the boat was towed for approximately three miles, it reportedly regained normal speed within an hour. GPS data shared by the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources indicated that the boat returned to its original departure point at 5:44 p. m.

However, Wells was not on board for the return trip, and his fate remained uncertain.

The timeline of events leading to Wells’ disappearance is still murky. According to Jackson County Chancery Judge Ashlee Cole, whose son was among the group, Wells was last seen around 3 p. m.

âThey left around 4:30 p. m. when the boat was taking on water and they had an issue with the bilge pump,â she explained.

Reports indicate that Wells chose to remain on the island, planning to return later with other friends.

The young man’s family reported him missing later that night, and his body was discovered two days later in the waters off the northwest end of Horn Island. Identification was made through dental records, and while the cause of death has not been disclosed, Jackson County Sheriff John Ledbetter stated there is currently no suspicion of foul play. Investigators believe Wells may have drowned during the ill-fated excursion.

Civil rights attorney Ben Crump, representing Wellsâ family, has called for an independent autopsy, funded by former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick. However, the results have been delayed due to flight issues, with Wellsâ body transported over 800 miles to Washington, D. C.

for examination. Crump expressed hope that the findings will be available âsoon, very soon,â and previously mentioned that they would clarify if there were any injuries beyond drowning.
As the community mourns, Wells’ funeral is set to take place in Ocean Springs on Monday. His mother, Christine Wonsley, shared her grief online, reflecting on the surreal nature of planning a memorial for her son. âAll the emotions are running together.
I thank God for the moments of being able to watch videos and hear his laugh again. We miss you so much Nolan,â she wrote.
As the investigation continues, many are left wondering what truly happened on that fateful day.
