Mystery solved after sisters find 'eerie' old family photo hanging on the wall of an Airbnb rental

A family vacation took an unexpected twist when two sisters stumbled upon an old family photo in their Airbnb rental, leaving TikTok users both amazed and bewildered. Libby and Aubrey Birrell from Utah were celebrating their grandfather’s milestone 80th birthday in Oceanside, San Diego, when they made the startling discovery.

The sisters were enjoying a family gathering with around 30 relatives when they noticed a framed beach photograph hanging on the wall. To their astonishment, the image featured their own family members. “We were all in awe,” Aubrey recalled in a recent interview.

“I started FaceTiming my friends who know my family, and they were just as shocked.”

Initially, the sight of the photo sent chills down their spines. “The first night we were there, it felt really strange,” Aubrey admitted. “Did they know we were coming?

It was confusing and eerie, but also just 𝓈𝒽𝓸𝒸𝓀𝒾𝓃𝑔.”

Curiosity got the better of them, and they decided to ask their host about the photo. The host revealed that the artwork was created by a local photographer known for capturing aerial beach scenes, which are then showcased in vacation rentals.

As they examined the picture more closely, the sisters quickly recognized their father and younger brother from a family trip about a decade ago. “This looks like me,” their dad exclaimed, prompting Aubrey to respond with disbelief. “No, this is my dad.

That’s my sister, Libby, from 10 years ago, and that’s Brady, my brother,” she explained in the 𝓿𝒾𝓇𝒶𝓁 video that captivated viewers.

Libby chimed in, recalling the swimsuits they wore during that trip. “We are literally in this picture,” she said, as memories of their family outing to Mission Beach or Imperial Beach came flooding back.

While the mystery of the photo was resolved, it sparked a wave of intrigue online. Some TikTok users claimed to have seen similar beach photos in other vacation rentals across the country, including Florida, although these reports remain unverified.

The sisters’ 𝓿𝒾𝓇𝒶𝓁 video has elicited a mix of reactions, from laughter to concern. “A lot of people joked that it felt like the beginning of a horror movie,” Aubrey recalled. “Others shared their own stories of spotting themselves in unexpected places, which was really cool to hear.”

In a generous gesture, the host even offered to provide a copy of the beach print to the family. Now, the sisters view the experience with amusement and nostalgia. “I think it’s fun,” Aubrey said.

“If we could get a print from the photographer, that would be so cool to remember this by.”

As they reflect on their unique Airbnb encounter, one question lingers: what other surprises might await future guests in that rental home?
