The emotional opening of Lindsay Clancy’s murder trial brought the courtroom to tears as the former nurse sobbed and trembled in her wheelchair while prosecutors described the tragic deaths of her three young children.
Lindsay, 35, is charged with murdering five-year-old Cora, three-year-old Dawson, and eight-month-old Callan in their Massachusetts home on January 23, 2023. She has pleaded not guilty and is expected to argue she was in the grip of postpartum psychosis.
During Monday’s opening statements, prosecutor Shannon Buckingham told jurors the children were “coldly and efficiently executed.” She alleged Lindsay used exercise bands to strangle each child one by one while her husband Patrick was out picking up dinner.
Lindsay’s defense attorney Kevin Reddington asked the jury to consider her mental state. “This is a woman who was suffering from psychosis at the time,” he said, adding she had no motive and “loved her children.”
Reddington also showed graphic images of injuries Lindsay inflicted on herself after jumping from a second-story window, leaving her paralyzed from the waist down. He described her suicide attempt as “no 𝒻𝒶𝓀𝑒 suicide” and said she is “living in her own hell.”
Prosecutors pushed back, arguing Lindsay acted intentionally. “She made a choice – a deliberate and intentional decision – that she did not want to try anymore,” Buckingham said. She claimed Lindsay believed if she couldn’t care for her children the way she wanted, she had to take them with her.
Patrick Clancy, who has since remarried and moved to New York, is expected to testify for both sides. He has publicly forgiven Lindsay and filed a wrongful death lawsuit against healthcare providers who treated her before the tragedy.
The trial is expected to last six to eight weeks, with dozens of witnesses. As the court recessed, Lindsay wiped away tears while her defense team placed a hand on her back.
