A Florida mother is at the center of a heartbreaking case after police say she spent hours on her phone watching videos and visiting adult sites while her six-month-old son lay dying. The child’s father reportedly had no idea anything was wrong until he texted for a photo.
Tatiana Norman, 26, is accused of throwing baby Jeremiah Peters into a playpen and then waiting far too long to call for help. The infant was found unresponsive at her Lakeland home on West Chestnut Drive just before midnight on June 29. He was rushed to Lakeland Regional Hospital but was pronounced dead at 12:32 a.
m. the following morning.
Police Chief Sammy Taylor Jr. said the baby may have already been gone for hours before the 911 call was placed. “I think the child’s temperature when he got to the emergency room was 94, so I feel like he’d been dead for several hours by the time she decided to call us,” Taylor told reporters.
Norman initially said she put Jeremiah to bed while preparing a bottle, then found him on the tile floor after he fell from the bed. Detectives say her story later shifted to her sleeping beside the baby and her one-year-old, suggesting someone may have rolled onto him. But an autopsy reportedly didn’t match any of those explanations.
Investigators found an unexplained mark on Jeremiah’s thigh that Norman claimed came from hot bathwater. Court documents allege the injury was not consistent with that story but was instead caused by a more serious thermal event. According to the arrest affidavit, Norman eventually admitted to a series of disturbing incidents on the day her son died.
Around 9 a. m. , she told police she accidentally dropped Jeremiah face-first while reaching for a remote.
Instead of calling for medical help, she reportedly searched online for concussion symptoms and kept an eye on him at home. Then, another fall allegedly happened when her one-year-old climbed into the rocking bassinet, causing it to tip over with the baby inside.
The burn on Jeremiah’s leg also drew several different explanations. Norman allegedly blamed laundry detergent from the baby’s father, then admitted spilling microwave noodle broth onto his leg. The affidavit notes that the injury matched none of the stories she gave.
At around 1 p. m. , police say Norman became overwhelmed by her crying children and intentionally threw Jeremiah into a playpen from a standing position several feet away.
She reportedly demonstrated both an underhand and overhand throw to detectives, showing how the baby slammed his back and head into the un-cushioned base. Chief Taylor said the infant’s reaction to that impact appeared to be the moment of serious injury. “A visceral and obvious reaction of curling his hands and pulling his hands up,” Taylor described.
After that, Jeremiah became increasingly lethargic and drank less formula, but no one called for help. Phone records reveal a chilling timeline. At 2:10 p.
m. , Norman allegedly searched for “baby feels cold,” and minutes later she looked up “what happens when baby had concussion in Florida.” But then, at 3:34 p.
m. , she reportedly opened TikTok and watched a cooking video, returning to it repeatedly until 4:23 p. m.
Even more alarming, detectives claim Norman visited pornographic sites more than 30 times as her son’s condition kept getting worse. The baby’s father texted around 10 p. m.
asking for a photo, but got no response. He later discovered Jeremiah was no longer breathing. The Polk County Medical Examiner’s Office reportedly said the infant might have survived if he had received immediate medical care.
Norman told investigators she was dealing with depression, suicidal thoughts, PTSD, and borderline personality disorder, according to the affidavit. She has been charged with one count of aggravated child 𝓪𝓫𝓾𝓼𝓮, though prosecutors say the charges could be upgraded as the investigation continues.
