A Kentucky father says his family is serving a life sentence while the man who killed his 6-year-old son walks free. Ronald Exantus was released from prison Wednesday after completing his sentence for the December 2015 attack that took Logan Tipton’s life.
State officials say the release follows the sentence issued by the Woodford Circuit Court. The Kentucky Department of Corrections told WKYT that the parole board did not release Exantus and that he was not let out early.
He is no longer in state custody and does not face any other probation tied to the killing.
Logan’s father, Dean Tipton, did not hold back. “The judge and jury gave this monster a slap on the wrist while handing down a life sentence to my family,” he wrote on Facebook.
In another post, he admitted he was struggling to keep going. “This may be my breaking point,” he wrote.
According to reports, Exantus broke into the family’s home in Versailles, Kentucky, on Dec. 7, 2015. He fatally stabbed Logan while the kindergartner slept, then attacked Dean Tipton and his two sisters.
He reportedly told one sister that he would 𝓀𝒾𝓁𝓁 the entire family.
During the 2018 trial, a jury found Exantus not guilty of murder by reason of insanity after his attorney argued he was genetically schizophrenic. Exantus, now 42 and a former dialysis nurse, was instead sentenced to a maximum of 20 years in prison for the assault charges involving the other family members.
While behind bars, he received nearly nine years of sentence credit, which sped up his release, according to WKYT.
Exantus was initially paroled on Oct. 1, 2025. Eight days later, he was back in custody after moving to Florida and failing to register as a convicted felon, a violation of his parole.
He was extradited to Kentucky and remained locked up until Wednesday.
During that time, Kentucky lawmakers passed “Logan’s Law,” which amended parole eligibility for violent offenders, changed insanity defense procedures, and removed some early-release options. Governor Andy Beshear signed the bill in April, but it does not apply retroactively to Exantus.
Dean Tipton said the law is still not enough. He wrote on Facebook that violent criminals should not be able to knock so much time off their sentences, and he wants further changes to the judicial system.
He has also been open about his anger, previously telling WKYT that if he ever crossed paths with Exantus, he would 𝓀𝒾𝓁𝓁 him.
