A former police detective says she was made a “scapegoat” after being fired for allegedly using crude language about transgender women while fighting a policy that could have forced female officers to strip-search biological males.
Rachel Fletcher, a 49-year-old former detective constable with Northumbria Police, lost her job last week after a misconduct panel ruled her comments amounted to gross misconduct. She insists she was simply standing up for women’s rights.
At the center of the controversy was a now-suspended National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC) guidance from 2022 to early 2024. The policy reportedly allowed officers and detainees to self-identify their gender, meaning female officers could be required to conduct intimate searches of transgender women who hadn’t undergone reassignment surgery or obtained a gender recognition certificate.
It also meant biological male officers identifying as women could search female detainees.
Fletcher, who worked in child protection and recently led a major investigation that put a serial pedophile behind bars, says she openly challenged the guidance with colleagues. She denies using the phrase “c*s in frocks” but admits to making other blunt comments about men, which she says were taken out of context.
“One of the comments I made was something along the lines of, imagine you are a female student officer and you are asked to carry out a strip search of a person you’ve been told is a woman, only to find they have a co,” she said. “How would she feel? Would she have the confidence to object?”
The panel found she had breached standards of professional behavior, including discreditable conduct and equality and diversity rules. She was dismissed without notice.
Fletcher says the crude language she used was common in her office, where officers daily described the mechanics of sexual offenses. She called the strip search policy “dangerous and irresponsible” and says she was shut down for speaking out about misogyny.
“I have been made a scapegoat,” she said. “This isn’t about throwaway comments I might or might not have made. This has happened because I dared to speak out about the rights of women and girls.”
Supporters have raised more than Ā£21,500 on GoFundMe to help her and her children while she searches for a new job. She says she would return to policing “in a heartbeat” if given the chance.
The NPCC has since issued new interim guidance making biological ššš the default for intimate and strip searches, following a Supreme Court ruling in April 2025. The earlier policy was criticized by the then Policing Minister Chris Philp, who called it “not right, safe or respectful.”
Fletcher’s sacking has sparked debate about free speech, gender identity policies, and the rights of female officers. But one question remains: how far can officers go when challenging policies they believe are unsafe?
