A Kentucky middle school teacher is behind bars after authorities say she crossed a line with a student, and she’s now facing charges under a brand new state law that just took effect last month.
Sadie M. Flores, 25, who worked at Graves County Middle School in Mayfield, was arrested Friday afternoon. According to the Graves County Sheriff’s Office, she’s been charged with grooming a minor, a Class D felony under a Kentucky statute that became law on July 15.
The case began when school officials learned of an alleged improper relationship between Flores and a minor student in the district. Administrators immediately contacted the sheriff’s office, which launched a criminal investigation.
Detectives say they seized electronic records, conducted interviews, and carried out other investigative steps. Flores was questioned Friday afternoon and taken into custody around 3:30 p.m.
She was first booked into the Graves County Restricted Custody Center before being moved to a facility outside the county. Sheriff Jon Hayden confirmed the investigation is still active.
Graves County Schools Superintendent Matt Madding released a statement saying district leaders acted quickly. “School officials immediately reported this information to the Graves County Sheriff’s Department for investigation,” he said.
Madding added that because the case is ongoing, the district can’t share many details, but stressed that student safety is the top priority. “We take any allegation involving the safety of a child or the professional conduct of an employee extremely seriously,” he said.
The grooming charge is part of a new law designed to target adults who allegedly build inappropriate relationships with minors before any sexual 𝓪𝓫𝓾𝓼𝓮 occurs. Authorities have not released the student’s age or said whether more charges could follow.
