A mystery cat covered in red dye has been spotted wandering around a Texas city.
Officials are urging the public not to help the feline despite their concern.
Rescuers are desperately trying to capture the gray cat covered in matted red splotches.
She was spotted lurking in the League City area.
League City Animal Care announced this last week.
Residents should not attempt to catch or put out food for the “red friend.”
Additional attempts to approach her can hinder their trapping efforts, authorities said.
“We are aware of the cat that has been seen around the community with red dye or paint on her fur, and we want everyone to know this baby is not forgotten,” League City Animal Care wrote in a statement.
“Our team is actively working to safely trap and get this cat into our care so she can receive the attention she needs.”
In a Monday update, rescuers said they are still working to safely trap the red kitty.
They are getting help from cat caregivers near the feline’s stomping grounds.
Images of the painted cat sparked concern amongst community members.
Some grew suspicious it could be tied to a dog-fighting ring.
“I could be wrong, but aren’t “painted” animals usually associated with illegal dog-fighting rings?” one user wrote.
“Could be it escaped from such a situation and maybe investigations need to be made about possible dog fighting rings in our area?” the same user added.
“I hope the police are involved to catch who did this,” another user said.
“You know someone has a video of this being done.”
Local law enforcement has not yet announced an active investigation.
They have not announced any potential charges of animal cruelty, KTRK reported.
Anyone who sees the red fur baby is asked to message League City Animal Care.
They should include her location and the time she was spotted.
