A 10-hour manhunt in Georgia came to an end on Tuesday. A bloodhound helped deputies track down a dangerous suspect. The suspect was accused of shooting the mother of his child.
He then fled on foot.
The search stretched across the rural landscape of Butts County. It began early Tuesday morning. It did not conclude until the evening hours.
A bloodhound from the Georgia Department of Corrections K-9 Unit played a crucial role in the final capture.
The suspect was identified as Darian Berry Sr. He is 46 years old. He is a convicted felon.
The Butts County Sheriff’s Office confirmed his identity.
The domestic incident took place in the city of Flovilla. Flovilla is located roughly 50 miles south of Atlanta. Officials said the situation unfolded there on Tuesday morning.
The sheriff’s office issued a statement about the manhunt. “He made the choice to run, but he could not outrun the determination of law enforcement or the incredible tracking ability of the bloodhounds that ultimately helped bring him into custody,” the statement said. The statement highlighted the resolve of the officers involved.
It also praised the specialized skills of the K-9 unit.
Deputies first responded after receiving reports of a domestic incident involving Berry. According to his charges, Berry allegedly attempted to confine or restrict his victim. He was also accused of arson and stalking.
As deputies arrived, Berry allegedly fled on foot. He was believed to be armed with a handgun. This prompted a major search effort across the area.
