In a harrowing case that has shocked the community, four men have been convicted in connection with the brutal murder of Tomasz Samel, a father who was kidnapped, tortured, and ultimately set ablaze. The tragic events unfolded after authorities seized a significant stash of illegal cigarettes linked to an organized crime group.
The 45-year-old victim was taken from his home in Handsworth in March 2019 by individuals posing as INTERPOL agents, according to court testimonies. He was forcibly loaded into a white Peugeot van and transported to Liverpool, where he faced a horrific fate—being doused in petrol and ignited.
Samel suffered severe burns covering 75% of his body and was abandoned in a desolate area. Despite his efforts to seek medical assistance, he succumbed to his injuries three months later in the hospital.
At Birmingham Crown Court, Tobiasz Kozlowski, 38, from Kirkby, and 48-year-old Neil Jones, who had no fixed address, were found guilty of both murder and conspiracy to inflict grievous bodily harm. Meanwhile, Kevin Wooden, 46, from Banbury, and Kye Arthur, 35, from Bristol, were acquitted of murder but convicted of manslaughter. All four men had previously admitted to charges of conspiracy to kidnap and false imprisonment.
Additionally, Sandra Kozlowska, 38, the wife of Tobiasz Kozlowski, was found guilty of aiding an offender. Sentencing for the group has been postponed until October 9, with the men remaining in custody while Kozlowska is permitted to stay on bail.
Kate Seal from the Crown Prosecution Service expressed her condolences to Mr. Samel’s family, highlighting the brutal nature of the crime and the extensive investigation that led to these convictions. “Our thoughts remain with Mr.
Samel’s family, who have endured unimaginable suffering,” she stated, hoping the verdicts would bring some sense of closure.
