The dog, a compact, muscular mixed breed now called Meatball by her owners, arrived at a Pittsburgh rescue facility in a state of profound fear and confusion. “I don’t know why, but if I’m late after 6 p. m. , she knows it.
She does this little tap dance. And she just came up with that on her own,” the owner said, laughing.

“She doesn’t look like she can move, but when you open a bag of Cheerios, she’ll start running,” the owner noted.

“She’s just a brick house,” the owner said. “There’s been a couple times where she’s done it to someone who isn’t as familiar with her, and they’ll go to step back and like practically trip over her, and she doesn’t move at all.”

“I remember when she first came to live with us, she would flinch the second you would step around her or bend to pick something up. It was like she thought you were trying to hit her. It was so sad to see,” the owner said.
“Now she’ll just come and sit right between your feet or on top of your feet. “

“It was such a magical thing to see her open up to people and learn to trust again. It’s just really beautiful to see how far she’s come,” the owner said, her voice thick with emotion.
