The car went silent, and then my mother looked straight at my boyfriend and said, “Maybe if your mother cared as much as I do, your brother would still be here.” His little brother died in a car...

My mother and I were arguing in the kitchen before we even made it to the car. She was trying to correct how I brush my teeth, and I’m a grown woman who pays her own bills. I told her to stop babying me. She didn’t like that.

We all got into the car to go out for brunch. My boyfriend smirked when she made another comment, this time about my seatbelt being too loose. He knew what she was doing. She saw that smirk, and something in her snapped.

She turned to him and said something about how she actually cares about the well-being of her children. Then she added, “Maybe if you or your mother cared as much as I do, your younger brother would still be here. ”

The car went dead silent. My dad stared straight ahead.

My boyfriend just sat there, frozen. His younger brother died two years ago in a car accident. He was eleven years old. My mother knows this.

And she used it as a weapon because my boyfriend smirked at her. I told her to get out of the car. She refused. So I took my boyfriend’s hand, led him to our own car, and drove him to a hotel.

I told him we weren’t spending another night under her roof. He didn’t say a word the whole way there. He’s barely spoken since. He’s been watching soccer all day, staring at the screen, not really seeing it.

I know he’s not okay. He never fully got over his brother’s death. When it happened, he went through a dark depression that scared everyone who loved him. My mother didn’t just insult him.

She kicked the door open on that grief and walked right in. I called my father and told him to pack our things and bring them to the hotel. He agreed. He also apologized to my boyfriend when he arrived, and they shook hands.

My father said he’d talk to my mother about fixing things. I know that’s a lie. She’ll never apologize. She’s already told my father she’s disappointed in me for making this trip about “my relationship.

” She wants an apology from me. For her cruelty. It’s absurd. My boyfriend and I drove the three hours home.

I tried to cheer him up by asking about the soccer match he’d been watching, because he loves when I take an interest in his hobbies. Normally he’ll light up and explain everything. This time he barely said two words. So I gave him space.

We sat in silence for most of the ride, and I read articles about narcissism on my phone. Something about her behavior clicked into place. This wasn’t a big mouth. This was something else.

When we got home, he seemed more at peace. I let myself hope we could put her behind us. Then the voicemail came. My boyfriend’s father had called.

He asked us to phone him back. My mother had called my boyfriend’s parents and questioned their parenting. Directly. She called the parents of the boy who died and tore into them about seatbelts.

His mother won’t get on the phone with us. His father said she’s been sobbing nonstop. I felt sick. I still feel sick.

My boyfriend is not an angry person. He’s calm, agreeable, gentle. But he was shaking when he told me he wants my mother out of his life completely. I agreed.

I told him I want that too. But I’m terrified she won’t let us cut her out without trying to hurt us even more. His parents live on the other side of the country. He feels helpless, and I don’t know how to fix that.

I don’t know how to fix any of this. It feels like my mother erased years of his therapy and healing in a single afternoon because she didn’t like the way he smirked at her. The next day, I called my father. I told him I couldn’t keep him in my life while he keeps enabling her.

He started crying. He begged me to reconcile with my mother. I explained why I couldn’t. We sat on the phone in silence for what felt like an hour.

He broke the silence. He told me he was proud of me, and that he loved me more than anything in the world. I was sobbing when my boyfriend walked in. He hugged me, then asked to speak to my father himself.

After they talked, he asked me if I truly believed I had to cut my father out of my life. I told him yes. I couldn’t move forward while I was still in contact with someone who allowed my mother’s hateful behavior to continue. My boyfriend didn’t push.

He just said it was my decision, and he didn’t want me to feel pressured either way. I told my father he needed to get my mother help, and he needed to put his foot down. He promised he’d do whatever it takes to get me back in his life, even mentioning divorce if my mother refuses to work on herself. But for now, he loves her, and he wants to keep trying to help her.

I admire his loyalty, even though it hurts. I told him I hope he keeps his promise. I also told myself not to count on it. That night, my boyfriend and I had a long talk.

I was convinced he was going to leave me. I’d been bracing for it for days. I’m the reason his family has been dragged through this. I feel responsible for all of it.

But he didn’t break up with me. He asked me how I was feeling, and what I needed from him. Then he told me how he was feeling too. He suggested I start meeting with his therapist, and I agreed.

We sat together in silence for hours after that. He didn’t want to cuddle. He barely looked at me. He just asked me to be there with him.

So I was. Eventually, he started talking about his brother. We shared stories about him, the way he laughed, the things he loved. We celebrated his life together.

It was sad, but somehow not depressing. It was gentle. Then he said something that broke my heart. He started talking about what he could have done differently.

I told him immediately that none of it was his fault. But I’m not sure he believes me. I think some part of him believes my mother’s horrible words. The thought of that is unbearable.

I video-called his parents to apologize for my mother’s behavior and to offer my support. They were so kind. They told me they loved me, and that they’d always lend an ear if I needed guidance. They’re innocent, beautiful people, and I can’t understand how anyone could hurt them like this.

I wrote my mother a long email. I told her why I was cutting contact. I told her how much she hurt me and the people I love most. I told her she’s not acting like the mother who raised me.

I asked her to get help. I told her I still love her, despite everything. I told her I love my father too, and that I can’t sit by and watch her destroy herself or hurt the people I love. She replied almost immediately.

I told myself not to read it, but I couldn’t stop myself. She wrote that she’s disgusted that I’m entertaining my father’s idea of getting her evaluated. She said we’re the ones who need evaluations. She called me a fool for abandoning my family for a man I met at a bar.

She said I’m not the daughter she raised. She said she’ll never forgive me for making her husband cry because I selfishly want to spend more time with my boyfriend. I cried when I read it. Not because her words hurt me, but because I could see clearly that something is wrong with her, and she’s too scared or too hateful to let anyone help.

I’m grieving my mother. I’m afraid I’ll never see her again. I know my boyfriend’s plans to propose are delayed at best. But I don’t think my mother has succeeded in destroying my future.

I won’t let her. I’m optimistic about what comes next. I have my boyfriend beside me, and he’s not going anywhere.

We’re going to get through this together.
