An 8-year-old girl from Louisiana has tragically passed away after reportedly contracting a rare brain-eating amoeba linked to a swim in a local lake. Lillian Smart’s family shared the heartbreaking news on social media, revealing that she died just one day after celebrating her birthday.

In a poignant statement, the Smart family expressed their devastation, saying, “The injuries to her brain were too severe for her little body to recover from. We are heartbroken and honestly do not know what to do next. How do we put one foot in front of the other without our girl?”

Health officials in Louisiana confirmed that Lillian was hospitalized due to an infection caused by Naegleria fowleri, a microscopic amoeba known to lead to a rare and often fatal brain infection. While the Louisiana Department of Health did not publicly name Lillian in their announcement, her family identified her as the patient who had been admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit in Ruston.

According to reports, the infection is believed to have been contracted while swimming in Lake Claiborne shortly before her illness began. The Louisiana Department of Health has highlighted that this amoeba thrives in warm freshwater environments and is not found in saltwater or properly chlorinated pools.

The symptoms of Naegleria fowleri infection can escalate quickly, starting with headaches and fever before leading to more severe issues like stiff neck and seizures. Unfortunately, the disease often leads to death within one to two weeks, with a staggering 97% fatality rate, as noted by the CDC.

This incident is not the first of its kind in Louisiana. Since 2011, three other deaths have been linked to Naegleria fowleri in the state, with previous cases occurring under similar circumstances.
