I was 19 when I came out to my deeply religious family. They disowned me, kicked me out, stopped paying for my education, and cut off all contact. I lost my entire extended family in one weekend. I was alone, broke, and had to drop out of a private university I could no longer afford.

That’s when Claire stepped in. She was a friend from school who never once acted like she was from a wealthy family. She let me stay with her, helped me get back on my feet, and even paid for therapy when I was drowning in abandonment issues. I will never forget her kindness.
I never went back to school. I worked low-wage jobs for years while she graduated and moved into her family’s business. A few months after she settled in, she offered me a position as her driver and assistant. The salary was eight times my current income, with benefits, and the job was easy.
I drove a comfortable car and got paid to spend my days with my best friend. I’d been there for two years and loved it. Then I met Jack. He also worked at Claire’s family business, and we hit it off.
I’d been dating him for about 18 months when he suddenly mentioned that Claire was a spoiled, selfish girl who only had her position because her father owned the company. I had no idea he hated her until weeks ago, when they clashed at work. I asked him what he planned to do. He said she wouldn’t see it coming, that he was going to mess something up to make her look terrible and destroy the confidence others had in her.
I begged him not to do it. It was wrong, unethical, and petty. But his mind was made up, and I couldn’t change it. I was stuck.
I owed Claire everything. She had saved me when I had nothing. So I told her everything he’d said. She was grateful, told me she knew it must have been difficult, and said she wouldn’t forget my loyalty.
She handled the rest. Jack got fired. Now he’s furious at me. He says I chose her over him and betrayed him.
He demanded I prove my love by quitting my job and cutting Claire out of my life. I refused. I didn’t want to break up with him, but I also wasn’t going to abandon the friend who’d been there for me when my own family wasn’t. Most of the comments told me to dump him and pointed out that his “mistake” wasn’t a mistake at all.
It was planned and deliberate. A mistake is leaving your oven on. A mistake is forgetting a birthday. What he did was malicious and calculated.
They also raised a darker possibility: maybe he’d only dated me to get close to Claire. At first I couldn’t believe it. He always seemed so into me. But then I remembered the time he asked me to put in a good word with Claire for a promotion.
He didn’t get it and was furious, though he did get a different promotion six months later. The more I thought, the more pieces clicked into place. Six days after my first post, I confronted Jack. I asked him if he’d ever considered my friendship with Claire when he started dating me.
He denied it at first, insisted he loved me. But when he saw I wasn’t backing down, he finally snapped. “Why hide it anymore? Yeah, I approached you to get info on her.
Do you really think I’d be interested in a waste like you? ”
That’s exactly what he said. Then he left. I’d been played for a year and a half.
It was humiliating, realizing I’d been nothing but a tool in his plan against Claire. But at least he never got the chance to hurt her. I couldn’t have forgiven myself if he had. I went to Claire’s flat and we talked for hours.
I was embarrassed for falling for his BS and putting her at risk. She told me she was proud of me, that I protected her when she needed someone to have her back. We’re on great terms now. I learned my lesson.
No more dating anyone who has any professional relationship with Claire. I’ll be a better, more loyal friend to her from now on. The second story comes from a different woman, and it starts with her overhearing something she wishes she hadn’t. I’d been with my boyfriend for two years.
Our relationship had its rocky moments, but I truly believed we cared about each other. He had an ego problem that caused issues now and then, and I knew I wasn’t perfect either. I had a temper, but I always tried to be better. That evening, his friends came over.
I stayed upstairs to give them space, hanging out in one of the bedrooms. An hour later, I was walking past the kitchen and heard my name. I stopped and listened. My boyfriend was telling his friends about our sex life in graphic detail.
He said Latinas are crazy, which is why they’re wild in bed. I’m Afro-Brazilian, and the way he emphasized my race disgusted me. He spoke about me like I was some object he played with. He even admitted he intentionally provoked me sometimes because the sex was better when I was angry.
I’m a very private person. I don’t talk about my relationships, let alone my sex life. Hearing him share that, hearing him humiliate me like that, made me feel violated and objectified. I avoided him the rest of the day.
When he asked what was wrong, I just said we’d talk later, because I needed to gather my thoughts. The comments told me to delete any intimate photos he might have. I thought that wasn’t necessary. How wrong I was.
Five days later, I checked his phone while he was showering. I found the nudes and deleted them all. Then I got paranoid and checked his WhatsApp. I’m so glad I did.
He had several group chats. He hadn’t sent my nudes, not the ones I’d given him. Instead, he had been sending random pictures he took of me without my knowledge. Me working out, me getting changed.
And a few days earlier, he sent his friends a photo of me sleeping naked on his bed. My back was to the camera, but it was still exposed. I was horrified. I’ve never felt so betrayed.
And yes, he had also sent my nudes to his best friend. He was so possessive, I never would have expected that from him. When he came out of the shower, I told him I’d overheard everything. He just laughed, covered his face, and said, “Oh crap,” like it was a joke.
He started kissing and touching me, which is what he always does when he knows he messed up. I pushed him away and told him I knew about the WhatsApp photos. He accused me of being sensitive and nosy. He said what he did was perfectly normal, “a guy thing.
” He had no defense for his obsession with my ethnicity. When I told him we were done, he laughed and said I couldn’t break up with him. “People know we’re together. You’re not going to dump me and start banging other guys.
”
That’s when I knew he had serious problems. I left without a fight because he probably thought I’d come crawling back. But the texts started immediately. At first I ignored them.
Then they turned threatening. He said he’d post my nudes on Twitter and social media, and even send everything to the football club where I work, knowing it would ruin my reputation. I warned him I’d go to the police. He said, “I won’t if you don’t break up with me.
”
So I promised I wouldn’t. I went to his house and acted like I forgave him. I asked if he had anything on his laptop, and he said no, everything was on his phone. Then I waited until he fell asleep.
I took his phone and deleted every video and picture, going through every single app. I permanently erased everything from iCloud and restored the phone. Then I smashed it to pieces and threw it in the toilet. I had no regrets.
I did the same with his laptop. He’d lied about having anything on it, and my gut told me otherwise. The liar. When he woke up and realized what I’d done, he started screaming and calling me every name in the book.
I found it hilarious, because I’m the crazy Latina, right? His grandfather heard the racket and started berating him in Italian for speaking to me that way. When my ex finally calmed down, he said he forgave me. As if I was the one who needed forgiveness.
A day later, his friends texted me to ask if I was okay. They said my ex told them he’d dumped me. Sure. I kept his threats and I’ve gone no contact.
He knocked on my door yesterday, but I didn’t answer. I know I was naive, but at least it’s a lesson learned. I won’t let anyone treat me like that ever again.
