Tony Romo bizarrely lauds Patrick Mahomes for bad throw: ‘Winning play’

Tony Romo definitely watches football differently than most.

After all, he was a four-time Pro Bowl-winning quarterback while starring for the Cowboys for well over a decade.

But while on the CBS broadcast for the Chiefs’ 26-25 win against the Bengals on Sunday, Romo — whose analysis has been both highly praised and severely criticized during his tenure with the network, which began following his retirement at the end of the 2016 season — had an interesting take on a Patrick Mahomes throw that appeared ill-advised on the surface.

Tony Romo was on the call for Chiefs vs. Bengals during Week 2.

Mahomes had a play in the red zone where a throw to Travis Kelce, which was incomplete at his tight end’s feet, and Romo still referred to this as “a winning play.”

“This is Mahomes throwing it in the dirt on purpose,” Romo insisted. “He’s got such great instincts. … It’s a winning play.”

At the time, the Chiefs were facing a second-and-4 from the Bengals’ 6-yard line, and they were eventually able to convert a fourth down that set up a first-and-goal situation — and then ultimately a 19-yard field goal by Harrison Butker, which evened the score between the pair of teams late in the opening quarter.

Commenters were displeased with Romo, of course.

One said, “Mahomes spiked an easy wide-open slant and Romo pretended like he did it on purpose lmaooooo.”

Another added, “Look, I love Mahomes, too, but Romo was giving him way too much credit here.”

A third called for Romo to lose his job, simply saying, “Fire Tony Romo.”

Mahomes ended up finishing 18-for-25 with two touchdowns and two interceptions during the Chiefs’ second straight win to start the year, tossing passes to Rashee Rice and Wanya Morris in the end zone.

They’ll attempt to start the season 3-0 with a game next weekend against the Falcons on “Sunday Night Football.”
