Al Jazeera’s Tony Cheng has more from Beijing and Defence Editor Alex Gatopoulos explains more about this:

It is rare for these tests to be publicly acknowledged and they usually take place in isolated in-land areas rather than at sea.
The military says the move was routine and complies with international law.
It also said the test wasn’t directed at any country or target.

China recently announced that it successfully test-launched an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) equipped with a “dummy warhead” into the Pacific Ocean. This development comes amidst rising tensions in the region and reflects China’s ongoing efforts to enhance its military capabilities. The test is seen as a demonstration of China’s growing proficiency in missile technology and its commitment to modernizing its strategic forces. Analysts suggest that such tests could further escalate geopolitical tensions, particularly with neighboring countries and the United States, as they raise concerns about the potential for real-world applications in a volatile security environment.
