Postgame Lakers-Timberwolves | LeBron says Lakers need to do better at “controlling 3-point defense” (video)

In a disappointing start to the playoff series against the Minnesota Timberwolves, the Los Angeles Lakers fell short with a 123-107 defeat at home. Despite LeBron James’ extensive playoff experience, he acknowledged the team’s need to improve on critical aspects of their game, particularly their three-point defense and overall physicality.

Following the game, LeBron emphasized the importance of controlling “the controllables.” He pointed out that the Lakers struggled after the first quarter, highlighting a significant lapse in defense during the second quarter, where they were outscored 38-20. The Timberwolves capitalized on the Lakers’ weaknesses, notably by racking up 21 three-pointers—a franchise playoff record—and converting 20 fast-break points.

LeBron’s comments reflected a sense of urgency as he addressed the need for the Lakers to better manage their defensive assignments against Minnesota’s sharpshooters. He noted the necessity of closing out on shooters effectively and ensuring their own shooters get open looks. The Lakers also faced challenges in transition defense, allowing the Timberwolves to exploit missed opportunities near the rim, which contributed to a staggering differential in fast-break points.

The Timberwolves’ success from beyond the arc was not merely a result of hot shooting but also of the Lakers’ defensive lapses. LeBron indicated that while some of Minnesota’s plays were exceptional, there remained areas that his team could control, such as rotations and positioning. He highlighted that the Lakers need to tighten their defense to force the Timberwolves into scoring against their half-court setup, something they failed to do in Game 1.

Another critical point raised by LeBron was the disparity in points off turnovers. The Lakers committed 13 turnovers, leading to 18 points for the Timberwolves, while only scoring nine points off Minnesota’s ten turnovers. He stressed the importance of protecting the ball and converting turnovers into scoring opportunities, particularly in a playoff setting.

As the Lakers prepare for Game 2, LeBron noted the importance of learning from their mistakes and adjusting their intensity and strategy. The team must adopt a more physical approach to match the Timberwolves, who are known for their aggressive style of play. This adjustment is vital for regaining home-court advantage and evening the series.

The Timberwolves, buoyed by their strong performance, showcased not just their shooting prowess but also their defensive capabilities, limiting the Lakers to just 39% shooting. The depth of their bench played a significant role as well, outscoring the Lakers’ bench 43-15. This comprehensive team effort not only secured a vital playoff win but also established a foundation of confidence for Minnesota moving forward.

As LeBron and the Lakers regroup, the focus will be on addressing the multifaceted challenges they faced in Game 1. With the pressure of the series mounting, it will be crucial for the Lakers to respond with a performance that reflects their potential and experience. Game 2 presents an opportunity for redemption, but it will require a concerted effort to control the controllables and execute a game plan that mitigates the Timberwolves’ strengths.
