Downtown LA curfew still in effect more than a week after ICE protests began

A curfew remains in effect in downtown Los Angeles, now more than a week after massive protests erupted against ICE raids and President Trump’s immigration policies. Tensions have simmered as the city grapples with the aftermath of the demonstrations, which drew over 30,000 participants, many of whom expressed their outrage peacefully. However, clashes erupted following the main event, resulting in five arrests and multiple injuries as police deployed tear gas to disperse a defiant crowd.

Mayor Eric Garcetti confirmed that the curfew will remain in place for the foreseeable future, citing ongoing concerns about public safety as protests continue in response to the raids. “As long as the raids persist, so will the protests,” Garcetti stated, emphasizing the need for community support amid the turmoil.

Local businesses are feeling the impact of the unrest, with many shops boarded up and foot traffic dwindling to a trickle. A vendor in Little Tokyo lamented that sales have plummeted from hundreds of dollars a day to a mere $60. “It’s like a ghost city,” he said, highlighting the fear that has driven customers away. The mayor has urged Angelenos to support their local businesses, many of which depend heavily on immigrant labor.

As the city navigates this challenging landscape, the mayor reflects on the human cost of the ongoing crisis, particularly on families separated by immigration enforcement. “There are entire sectors of our economy that couldn’t function without immigrant labor,” Garcetti noted, underscoring the urgent need for dialogue and understanding in these turbulent times. With the curfew still in effect, the situation remains fluid, and the community watches closely as events unfold.
