‘Sustained conflict’: US moves strike force near Iran (video)

As tensions escalate in the Middle East, the United States has positioned a strike force closer to Iran, signaling a potential shift in military strategy. Reports indicate that a crucial Situation Room meeting lasted approximately an hour and 20 minutes, concluding discussions about possible strikes against Iranian targets, particularly its nuclear facilities.

Senior fellow at the Jewish Institute for National Security of America (JINSA) and former National Security adviser John Hannah weighed in on the discussions, emphasizing that the U.S. is considering real options for intervention alongside Israel. The focus appears to be on Iran’s underground nuclear enrichment site at Fordow, which is heavily fortified and can only be penetrated by specialized U.S. bunker-busting bombs.

The U.S. military presence in the region has been increasing over the past several months, as President Trump has sought to establish a credible military deterrent. As negotiations with Iran over its nuclear program continue, the U.S. has been augmenting its forces, which may soon transition from a defensive posture to an offensive one, depending on the unfolding situation.

Hannah highlighted that while Israel has been actively targeting Iranian missile sites and other military infrastructure, it lacks the advanced aerial capabilities that the U.S. possesses. This includes aerial refueling and strategic bombers capable of executing deep strikes against fortified targets.

The conversation surrounding a potential strike raises critical questions about the implications of U.S. military action. If the U.S. were to conduct a preemptive strike, it could lead to retaliation from Iran, prompting fears of a broader conflict. Hannah noted that the nature of this engagement would differ significantly from previous large-scale wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, as it would primarily involve targeted airstrikes rather than ground campaigns.

The potential for significant backlash also looms large. As U.S. naval ships reposition in the Persian Gulf to ensure a defensive stance, the administration faces pressure to prepare for various Iranian responses. Moreover, Congress may seek to become involved, questioning whether President Trump requires legislative approval for military action.

In the Situation Room, Trump is surrounded by key intelligence and military advisors who provide assessments of the ongoing Israeli military operations and the state of Iran’s nuclear capabilities. The administration must also consider the economic ramifications, particularly regarding energy supplies, should Iran retaliate against U.S. interests or disrupt the Strait of Hormuz.

Hannah underscored the complexity of the situation, cautioning against conflating targeted strikes with broader regime change objectives. While there are discussions about potentially targeting high-level Iranian leaders, such actions could severely complicate diplomatic efforts and lead to unintended consequences.

As the U.S. evaluates its military posture and prepares for potential engagement, the situation remains fluid. The decisions made in the coming days could significantly impact regional stability and U.S. national security interests. The world watches closely as the administration navigates this critical juncture, aware that the repercussions of any military action could reverberate far beyond the immediate conflict.
