The morning was chaos. Dylan’s kid, Kit, was off school—mufti day, last day of term—and he didn’t want to go. He wanted to stay and wait for his mom, Sarah, who was helping the police with some problem. Dylan told him she’d be back soon.

But Kit wasn’t buying it. “I just want to see Mom. When’s she coming back? ”
Dylan tried to keep it light, offered to watch a film, make popcorn when she got home.
The kid just wanted his mom. And Dylan had no idea how to tell him she might not be coming back any time soon. Because Sarah had been arrested. Charged with Theo’s murder.
The news hit the street like a bomb. How could they arrest Sarah? First Dylan was questioned, now her. It made no sense.
Theo was massive—it would take real effort to kill him. And Sarah? She wasn’t capable of that. Everyone knew it.
But the evidence was stacking up. Theo’s blood was on her blouse and her shoes. And her alibi was shaky. She claimed she was being attacked at number eight Coronation Street at the same time Theo was killed in the precinct.
But the officer on the case, Lisa, wasn’t buying it. “If the attacker could have killed Theo before attacking you,” Lisa said, “then what’s to say you couldn’t have killed Theo before being attacked? ”
Sarah’s world was closing in. She was terrified.
She couldn’t stay in that cell. She begged the one person she thought could help. “Sarah, I can’t be here. I need to see you, okay?
I need to get out of here. Is there anything you can do? ”
But there was nothing to be done. Lisa had the bit between her teeth.
The CPS was charging Sarah with murder, and bail would be denied. She’d be remanded. “Just tell the truth,” came the desperate advice. “Tell them Gary made you cover it up.
If not for you, then for Harry. ”
Meanwhile, Betsy was lying in a hospital bed, barely able to speak or feed herself. She’d had a stroke. And the doctors had a name for what caused it.
Not just the stroke—what Dylan had done to her. It happened during sex. He choked her. Cut off the circulation.
She was fine at the time, seemed okay the next day. But the damage to the vessels in her neck had been done. Blood clots formed. And when they reached her brain, she had a stroke.
“Mate, it wasn’t even that hard,” Dylan insisted. “Doctor says it doesn’t have to be,” came the reply. “A few seconds of the circulation being cut off. That’s all it can take sometimes.
”
Dylan didn’t want to believe it. He swore he loved her, swore he’d never hurt her consciously. But the truth was there, heavy and inescapable. He’d caused it.
And now he was walking around denying everything, accusing Betsy of sleeping with Brody, blaming his dad for spreading lies about him. “Why are you telling people I did that to Betsy? ” he demanded. “What have I done to you?
”
But the weight of the accusation was crushing. Betsy’s mom was furious. “He sexually abused you, all right? You need to listen to your mom and get him locked up.
Daisy, he could have killed you. ”
And Betsy just lay there, unable to speak properly, unable to defend herself. She told her mom she didn’t know how it happened. But her mom didn’t need to know the details.
She knew who was responsible. Dylan’s own son knew something was wrong. Kit was scared. He didn’t want to go to school, didn’t want to leave the house.
He just wanted his mom. And Dylan couldn’t give him that. “How am I supposed to tell him that he’s not going to see his mom for I don’t know how long? ”
But there was no easy answer.
Sarah was in police custody, facing a murder charge. And Dylan was unraveling, caught between his guilt over Betsy and his desperation to keep his family together. He tried to talk to his own dad, to sort through the mess. But his dad wasn’t having it.
“Why do you think I did it? ” Dylan pleaded. “I wouldn’t have the guts to do that to her. ”
“You are either stupid or sick in the head,” came the sharp reply.
“Maybe both. ”
And the accusations kept coming. His dad stormed off, threatening him. Betsy’s family wanted him locked up.
Even the people he thought were on his side were starting to doubt him. Gary, who had been trying to keep his own secrets safe, was pushed to the brink. His partner accused him of protecting Sarah. “If Sarah was the one who killed Theo, who would she call in a crisis like that?
It’s you and that. Our old reliable, yet slightly dodgy ex. ”
Gary denied it, but the cracks were showing. “You tried to save your little mate and failed.
Am I right? ”
“I would never put her before our family,” Gary insisted. But the accusation hung in the air. And in the middle of it all, a new suspicion was growing.
Someone had tried to access evidence from the police store. An officer was being questioned. Was there corruption in the ranks? Was someone trying to tamper with the case against Sarah?
“Why did you attempt to access a clothes from the evidence store yesterday? ” the question came. And the answer was a denial. But the doubt remained.
Ryan, who had been trying to date Betsy, found himself caught in the crossfire. He tried to be supportive, but the situation was tearing everyone apart. He knew Dylan had been there, knew he shouldn’t be allowed anywhere near Betsy. But Dylan kept showing up, trying to control the narrative.
“He helped me,” Betsy said weakly when asked what Dylan had said. But her mom wasn’t convinced. “He only cares about himself. That’s it.
He’s only worried about his image and going to prison. Not about you. ”
Betsy’s mom was right. Dylan’s concern was all about himself.
His freedom. His reputation. His avoidance of prison. He wasn’t thinking about what he’d done to her, about the life he’d nearly destroyed.
And as the truth began to surface, the walls closed in on everyone. Sarah faced remand. Dylan faced the reality of his actions. And the question that haunted them all was simple: how far would they go to protect themselves, and who would pay the price?
The answer was coming. And it was going to change everything. But not yet. The charges were formalized.
Sarah would be up before the first sitting at court. She was told to explain it was self-defense. She couldn’t do it. She couldn’t believe this was happening.
And Dylan, standing in the middle of his shattered world, had to face the truth he’d been running from all along. He knew what he’d done. And he knew what he was about to lose.
