LA mayor under fire for new anti-ICE move (video)

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass is facing significant backlash following her support for a lawsuit aimed at limiting the activities of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in the city. This move comes at a time when tensions between federal enforcement agencies and local officials are escalating, as attacks on ICE officers have surged by nearly 700 percent.

Democratic Senators Alex Padilla and Cory Booker have introduced legislation that would prohibit ICE and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers from wearing masks during public operations. This legislative push coincides with alarming incidents of violence against federal agents, including the recent arrest of four individuals who attempted to disable CBP vehicles using homemade tire spikes in Los Angeles.

In response to the mayor’s actions, U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli expressed strong concerns over the political climate in California, accusing local politicians of fostering an environment of hostility towards federal enforcement. He criticized Mayor Bass for what he perceived as encouraging public resistance to federal law enforcement efforts. “If Karen Bass didn’t like the law, she should have changed it when she was in Congress,” Essayli stated, emphasizing that federal agents are merely executing the laws established by Congress.

The situation remains precarious for ICE and CBP officers on the ground, as the threat of violence looms large. Essayli noted an alarming increase in assaults against federal agents, with his office reporting a significant rise in charges related to such attacks. He pointed out that federal agents are being ambushed and assaulted, raising serious safety concerns for those enforcing immigration laws.

Essayli also made it clear that any actions taken against federal officers would not go unpunished. “If anybody gets in our way. If anybody touches our officers, you will be arrested,” he warned, underscoring the seriousness of the current environment surrounding immigration enforcement.

In a separate but related issue, California Governor Gavin Newsom has faced criticism for his stance on transgender athletes in school sports. Despite warnings from the Department of Justice, Newsom has stated that he would not prohibit transgender athletes from competing, a decision that has drawn ire from some quarters. Critics argue that the governor’s position lacks consistency, as he acknowledges fairness concerns while simultaneously refusing to act on them.

As tensions mount between local and federal authorities, the implications of these developments in Los Angeles resonate beyond the city, highlighting the ongoing national debate over immigration enforcement and the rights of marginalized communities. With federal agents facing increased risks and local officials challenging federal authority, the landscape of immigration policy continues to evolve in complex and contentious ways.
