Imagining 50 Cent’s ‘G-Dome’: What can we expect (News)

SHREVEPORT, La. (KTAL/KMSS) – The G-Unit team is back in the forefront of entertainment conversations in Shreveport after G-Unit Growth Advisor Orville Hall shared plans for a permanent G-Dome in an appearance before the Caddo Parish Commission Economic Development Committee.

While G-Unit has not provided a timeline for the construction or completion of any building project, Shreveport Mayor Tom Arceneaux has confirmed that the company, owned by Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, plans to build a permanent structure that is being compared to the Sphere in Las Vegas.

“It’ll be quite a new attraction for downtown Shreveport and the riverfront, so that’s what I understand he plans to do,” Arceneaux said in an interview with NBC 6.

While the Sphere is a fun comparison, the architectural and technological marvel came with a price tag of $2.3 billion, making it the most expensive entertainment venue in a city known as the “Entertainment Capital of the World”. A city that millions of visitors flock to annually, solely to have a good time. It is highly doubtful that Jackson’s venue would be built at such a price.

Although the specifics of the deal are being kept private, our imaginations and ability to search for information on the internet are not. Dome venues exist across North America and beyond, serving a wide range of athletic and entertainment purposes and creating an array of concepts that Jackson and his team can choose from.

There are many options for the type of dome that Jackson and his G-Unit team could bring to Shreveport, from structures supported by steel beams to air-supported domes with no poles or beams involved. However, considering the location of Jackson’s downtown properties and the current aesthetic of downtown, not all of the options would make sense, so to feed your imagination, we chose two possibilities.

Air-supported Domes: These domes use multi-layered PVC fabric that is heat-welded to maximize the strength of the structure. Internal air pressure provides support to keep the structure upright. According to the manufacturer’s website, they remain structurally sound in all seasons and have built-in climate control systems to ensure comfort without compromising the pressure needed to stay upright.

The PVC covering does not rust from exposure to the elements. Construction of these structures can take anywhere from eight weeks to four months to complete, depending on the size and scope of the project. The sizes are also wide-ranging, with some structures exceeding 200,000 square feet.

Bolder Adventure Park in Dallas, Texas, is a domed entertainment complex for families that boasts more than 66K square feet of indoor adventure. Examples of smaller domed structures are used for sports like pickleball and lacrosse in Brooklyn, New York. Perhaps the Caddo Commission will inquire about a PVC covering for the proposed pickleball complex they are considering.

For those who wonder about building compliance and safety, the manufacturers say the structures are insurable and constructed to meet the International Building Codes used by most local governments.

Frame-supported Building with fabric covering: These structures have a galvanized steel framework without columns or beams in the internal floor space. Design, manufacturing, delivery, and installation. These structures are recommended for facilities that exceed 25,000 square feet with a maximum width of about 200 feet.

Air-supported domes are permanent structures that are movable. Since the circulating air pressure is what provides for the dome shape, once the air system is stopped, the fabric can be flattened and relocated. The structures that are supported by galvanized steel are meant to be in place permanently; relocating the building to a new site is not feasible.

As of now, there are no specifics of the size or type of structure, only that it will be a marvelous dome that we must wait to see until the magic unfolds and inflates. The MPC website approvals for building construction or zoning requests related to any of Jackson’s downtown properties, including Millennium Studios, the project that initially drew the mogul to Shreveport.
