Florida Stepmom Locked Up for Sex with Stepson

A Florida nurse, Alexis von Yates, aged 35, has been sentenced to two years in prison for sexually assaulting her teenage stepson. The case, which has garnered significant attention, unfolded in Ocala, Florida, during the summer of 2024, when von Yates was caring for her stepson, then 15, while his father was away for work. The incident came to light after the boy bravely confided in his mother about the abuse upon returning home to Washington D.C.

The court proceedings revealed disturbing details about the relationship between von Yates and her stepson. Reports indicate that leading up to the incident, she made sexual jokes and engaged in inappropriate behavior with him, which prosecutors described as “grooming.” The abuse escalated to sexual acts, culminating in the father unexpectedly discovering the pair on the couch. Instead of immediately reporting the incident, he reportedly advised his son not to tell anyone, raising concerns about his response as a parent.

The boy’s mother, who addressed the court during sentencing, condemned von Yates as a “coward” and an “incestuous pedophile.” She expressed deep anguish over the impact of the abuse on her son’s mental health and their family’s dynamics. According to reports, the boy has since been in therapy to cope with the trauma, and his relationship with his father has been severely strained, with claims that they have not spoken since the incident.

In a plea deal, von Yates opted to plead guilty to a lesser charge of lewd and lascivious battery, which carries a maximum sentence of 15 years, rather than face the original charge of sexual battery by a person in a position of familial authority, which could have resulted in life imprisonment. The plea agreement was reportedly influenced by concerns over the potential trauma the victim would face if compelled to testify in court about the abuse.

Judge’s comments during sentencing highlighted the adverse impact of public testimony on child victims, acknowledging that forcing the boy to recount the details of the assault could result in further emotional harm. Following her prison term, von Yates will also face ten years of probation and must register as a sex offender, which will significantly affect her future employment opportunities and personal life.

Von Yates’s nursing license has been suspended by the state of Florida, with officials citing a “serious danger” to public safety as a justification for the emergency action. The case raises questions about the responsibilities of family members and the societal stigma surrounding male victims of sexual abuse, particularly in scenarios where a female perpetrator is involved. As the community comes to terms with the events, the focus remains on the long-term healing process for the victim and the implications of the crime on his family dynamics.
