The war in Ukraine has been defined by one shift more than any other: the rise of the drone. Ukraine had almost nothing of its own when the invasion began, so every piece of support mattered. But drones became the substitute for everything Ukraine lacked, including soldiers. They filled the gaps in the sky, and they changed the war in ways that Russia still hasn’t fully grasped.

At the heart of this transformation is the Flamingo, a drone that has become a symbol of Ukraine’s ingenuity. Its success didn’t happen overnight. Early strikes were desperate attempts to get one or more drones past Russian defenses and fly them into any part of a refinery. But the need to make the process repeatable drove constant innovation, even while avoiding the loss of expensive equipment.
The Flamingo’s design is deceptively simple. The engine sits in its own socket on top of the fuselage, rather than buried inside the airframe like on most cruise missiles. It looks crude, but that modular design is exactly what allowed for the breakthrough. Most of the Flamingos are even smaller than the original.
And many are powered by engines that Ukraine didn’t have before. One analysis of recovered fragments suggests that newer Flamingos are flying with a British-made engine instead of the usual Russian model. The actual engine hasn’t been publicly identified, but experts point to the Honeywell TFE 731 family as a likely candidate, using it only as a hypothetical comparison. What makes the TFE 731 so compelling is its efficiency.
Over 9,000 of these engines have been built, and they’re currently in use. One review notes that the TFE 7313, while having thrust comparable to the original engine, burns up to 15% less fuel under similar conditions. Apply that improvement to the Flamingo with the same fuel load and payload, and the declared 3,000 km range could stretch by about 450 km. To understand what 450 extra kilometers can accomplish, you need to understand how the Flamingo fights.
Radar technically works only within line of sight. A ground-level radar trying to see an object flying at an altitude of just 30 meters can only detect it out to roughly 21. 6 kilometers before the planet itself gets in the way. That means a drone flying low enough can slip past entire layers of air defense without ever being seen.
And then there’s the salvo size. If Ukraine’s drone output triples, Russia can’t triple its own response fleet in response. It doesn’t have the money, the resources, or the manpower to repair its defenses after each attack. Early in the war, Russia’s radarless prototype drones were a problem.
But now, Ukraine has mastered the art of low-altitude, long-range strikes. It has sent drones into the Moscow region multiple times since May 2023, and it has shown it can hit practically anything it targets. Russia’s response has been a mix of denial and deception. Kremlin officials deny attacks outright, then refuse to comment further, which everyone knows is the best way to prove you’re telling the truth.
They use ‘concierge strategy,’ literally translated to canned goods, to create fake appearances and confuse observers. Putin himself has at least three offices that look almost exactly the same, and he’s often not in any of them when the Kremlin claims he is. When heading to his Crimean residence, Putin announces to his bodyguards that he’s arriving at two different airports, then often doesn’t turn up at either, having taken a different route altogether. His travel routes are kept off any Russian maps, making him nearly untrackable.
This is the world Putin has built, a world of smoke and mirrors. And it’s collapsing under the weight of his own hubris. Russia’s oil and gas revenue, the primary source of funding for the federal budget, has suffered a 30% drop in the first five months of 2026 alone. The Ukrainian campaign has disabled more than 30% of Russia’s actual refining capacity and approximately 45% of its nominal capacity, according to thermal infrared satellite imagery gathered by the German intelligence firm Constellar.
The Kityishi refinery, for example, was hit by Ukraine in September 2025, then again in October, then twice in March 2026, then again in May, and once more in July. Ukraine keeps hitting the same targets, and Russia can’t stop it. Even if it wanted to rebuild, it doesn’t have the funds, resources, or manpower to properly repair its refineries after each attack. And if Ukraine maintains this level of intensity, Russia has no hope of a serious recovery.
Putin continues to pour billions into the war, but the numbers no longer add up. Russia can’t sustain losses of 20,000 troops a month when it only gains 15,000 new ones. The math is brutally simple. Ukraine, on the other hand, is growing stronger.
It’s not just defending itself anymore; it’s taking the fight to Russia with long-range drone strikes that are becoming more frequent and more effective. Russia has been forced to consider asking other countries for help. The very idea that Moscow would ask for assistance from a foreign partner is utterly humiliating for the Kremlin. If it goes ahead with this plan, Russia will have to cover the cost of exporting its crude oil to Kazakhstan, paying Kazakhstani companies to refine it, and then handle the logistical complexities of importing the refined products back.
That’s a devastating admission of weakness. It means Russia’s own oil infrastructure is so degraded that it can’t even process its own crude without outside help. Suddenly, Ukraine’s drones aren’t just a defense system; they’re a viable long-range strike tool that NATO can use as an alternative to its own domestic options. Ukraine’s defense industry can focus on supplying its own front line, where demand still vastly outstrips what any single factory can produce.
The export of Finnish weapons is limited precisely because Ukraine’s own war effort takes priority. This is the new reality. Russia can’t keep up. Ukraine has turned the war on its head, and Russia is scrambling to respond.
All because of one man’s hubris. Putin wanted to cut a ribbon and give a short speech, and in doing so, he unleashed a force that has changed warfare forever. Ukraine has proven that a smaller, more agile force can outmaneuver a larger, more powerful one using cheap, innovative technology. Drones are here to stay, and they’re likely to be one of the most important aspects of warfare for generations to come.
Russia may never recover. And that, more than anything, is Ukraine’s greatest victory.
