Manchester City striker Erling Haaland has sent a defiant message, following the defeat to Arsenal in the Community Shield on Sunday.
The Citizens were beaten on penalties at Wembley Stadium, having been seconds away from winning the game in normal time.
Cole Palmer scored an amazing goal, and it looked like being the winner.
But Leandro Trossard’s wickedly deflected effort off Manuel Akanji took the contest to a shootout.
Kevin De Bruyne and Rodri both missed their spot-kicks, with Arsenal converting all of theirs.
It was a disappointing result, but one that City’s players and Pep Guardiola will no doubt already be over.
After the game, there was a message from City superstar Haaland.
Erling Haaland breaks silence after Man City’s Community Shield defeat
Haaland didn’t have the best of games on Sunday.
While his movement was very good as usual, he just didn’t impact the game.
It can be argued that the service into him was way below par, though.
Haaland was substituted off shortly after the hour mark, with Arsenal fans taking great pleasure in booing him off the field.
The striker cheekily raised three fingers, referencing City’s Treble win, as he departed.
Taking to social media, Haaland sent a message of defiance.
He wrote the 12-word message yesterday evening: “The marathon is just getting started… Thank you for the support yesterday.”
Haaland is right, perspective is required
The marathon is indeed only just starting.
Arsenal fans had their moment yesterday, but pre-season is now out of the way.
City feel a little sluggish heading into the season but this is very normal.
Pep Guardiola’s side historically take a few weeks and sometimes months to reach their scintillating best.
By the end of the marathon, hopefully we will be talking about even more trophies for City.
