He Manipulated a Child Into Helping Murder His Wife... Now His Sentence Just Got Worse.

In a 𝓈𝒽𝓸𝒸𝓀𝒾𝓃𝑔 turn of events, a father who coerced his young child into assisting him in the brutal murder of his wife has seen his sentence extended after it was ruled to be “unduly lenient.” Robert Rhodes, 53, committed the horrific act against his wife, Dawn, in their Redhill, Surrey home on June 2, 2016, claiming self-defense in a case that has left many stunned.

Initially, Rhodes walked free from the Old Bailey just 11 months after the crime, bolstered by a story that painted Dawn as the aggressor. His young child, whose identity remains protected for legal reasons, supported this narrative, alleging that Dawn attacked them both, resulting in injuries to the child and Rhodes himself.

For nearly a decade, the blame for Dawn’s death fell squarely on her shoulders until the child, now a teenager, decided it was time to reveal the truth. In late 2021, they recanted their earlier testimony, stating that their mother had been ambushed by Rhodes while she was waiting for a surprise, with her eyes closed.

According to court documents, the child confessed to distracting Dawn by asking her to close her eyes and hold out her hands for a drawing. While they left the room, Rhodes approached Dawn from behind and fatally attacked her. This chilling revelation led to a retrial, where Rhodes was ultimately convicted of murder, perjury, and child cruelty, among other charges.

In January, he was sentenced to life in prison with a minimum term of 29-and-a-half years. However, Solicitor General Ellie Reeves later referred the case to the Court of Appeal, arguing that the original sentence did not adequately reflect the severity of the crime. During a recent hearing, it was determined that the minimum term should be increased to 33-and-a-half years.

Lady Justice May, who presided over the ruling, described the murder as “truly appalling,” emphasizing the particularly disturbing nature of involving a child in the cover-up. The prosecution painted a picture of a premeditated act, asserting that Rhodes had meticulously planned the attack and subsequent deception.

The now-teenage child, who testified against their father, expressed the deep emotional scars left by the ordeal. They described the trauma of being manipulated into participating in the crime and the ongoing mental health struggles they face as a result. The child articulated their desire to move forward from the pain but acknowledged the lasting impact of their father’s actions.

As the court proceedings continue to unfold, one question lingers: how will this tragic story of manipulation and betrayal affect the lives of those involved moving forward?
