Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is accused of leaking inaccurate financial information about the profits of blockbuster Black Adam to the press.
DC’s most recent Black Adam release was not a huge hit at the box office. However, the film wasn’t quite the flop like 2022’s Morbius. Uncertain sales and profits led news outlets to debate whether the film was profitable for Warner Bros ..
An article in early December 2022 announced that the film lost between $50 million and $100 million, sparking rumors that Black Adam was another DC flop.
In response, another article was published by Deadline : “The Rock” quickly assisted in its efforts to assure people that the film would turn a profit.
Matt Belloni of Puck magazine revealed in a news release that Dwayne Johnson has revealed Black Adam sales to Deadline , according to ” sources from several Warner Bros. executives.”
The article, which Belloni calls “full of false assumptions,” points out that Black Adam is making a profit of between $52 million and $72 million including revenue from VOD, Blu-Ray…
Belloni went on to call it “one of the dumbest commercial stories of all time” and doubted that the film hit the box office numbers Dwayne Johnson was expecting. Industry insiders also shared that the $100 million Black Adam global marketing figure offered was misleading.
Black Adam will never be as big of a hit with fans as a typical MCU movie, even though the starring ” The Rock ” movie has drawn direct comparisons to Captain America: The First Avenger .
Obviously, the fact that Black Adam ‘s margins are thin isn’t a huge failure, but neither is it a success to generate enough buzz to warrant a sequel.
It’s clear that “The Rock” has a huge passion for the project and has in many ways marketed the film to his 352 million Instagram followers. However, the general audience does not flock to the theater to see his own story about the superhero he plays.
The combination of Black Adam is not the blockbuster that Warner Bros. are expecting and with DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran likely hitting the reset button, Dwayne Johnson’s future in the DCU looks bleak.
Black Adam hits theaters on October 21, grossing $ 389 million worldwide while the production cost announced up to $ 200 million.
