A tragic mystery surrounds the death of 18-year-old Nolan Wells, a rising star in college football, whose body was discovered on Horn Island, a remote spot off the Mississippi coast. As details emerge about the conditions leading to his untimely passing, questions linger about the circumstances of that fateful day.
Brian Trascher, the national vice president of the United Cajun Navy, shared his observations from the air during the search for Nolan. He described the serene atmosphere over the Mississippi Gulf Coast, with warm temperatures and calm waters, contrasting sharply with the dangers lurking beneath the surface. “The water was mostly calm, very shiny, and hot,” Trascher recounted, noting that the water temperature was in the 80s.
On July 4, Nolan and his friends set out on a private boat to Horn Island, approximately 10 miles from the mainland, to enjoy their summer break before he was due to report to football camp at Southwest Mississippi Community College on July 6. The island is a beloved summer getaway, attracting hundreds of boaters seeking a brief escape from reality.
However, the day took a turn when Nolan’s group faced mechanical issues with their boat. They made a distress call around 4 PM, urgently requesting assistance as they struggled to keep their vessel afloat. “Hey, weāre at the west tip of Horn, and our bilge pump stopped working.
Weāre going. Weāre sinking,” one friend reportedly told the dispatcher.
While the group managed to leave the island at 4:31 PM and was towed back to safety, Nolan allegedly chose to stay behind after meeting someone new. Witnesses last saw him around 4 PM on the northwest tip of Horn Island, an area known for its perilous currents. Trascher emphasized the dangers, stating, “That island has a very strong current on the northwest tip.”
Josh Gill, the Cajun Navy’s incident coordinator, added that the area experiences significant tidal movement, making conditions unpredictable. “There is a pretty heavy tidal surge and tidal movement on that portion of the island,” he explained, highlighting the potential risks for unsuspecting visitors.
On July 6, Trascher was in the air when he spotted what he believed to be Nolan’s body. “Even from several hundred feet up, I could see the body,” he said, confirming it matched the description of what Nolan was wearing. Authorities later confirmed the sighting, but the cause of death remains undetermined pending an autopsy.
Nolan’s family, represented by civil rights attorney Ben Crump, is pursuing a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death. Crump announced plans to present the case to a grand jury once the sheriff’s department completes its inquiry. “The hope is that all relevant witnesses and evidence will be presented,” he stated.
While preliminary findings suggest Nolan may have drowned accidentally, the family is conducting its own investigation, raising concerns about potential tampering with Nolan’s cell phone. His mother, Christine, expressed her distress over the absence of expected social media activity, stating, “There were no saved pictures. There were no snaps from that day.”
As the community mourns Nolanās passing, his funeral service is scheduled for July 20 at Central Point Church in Ocean Springs, with Reverend Al Sharpton officiating and Hollywood star Tyler Perry covering the costs.
