A Massachusetts mother accused of killing her three young children allegedly told doctors she heard a chilling command just before the tragedyโfive words that could now decide her fate.
Lindsay Clancy, a former labor and delivery nurse, is standing trial for the deaths of her kids: five-year-old Cora, three-year-old Dawson, and eight-month-old Callan. Prosecutors claim she carefully plotted the murders, while her defense says she was in the grip of a rare and terrifying mental health crisis.
According to her attorney Kevin Reddington, Clancy later said a voice told her, โThis is your last chance. ๐๐พ๐๐ the children so you can ๐๐พ๐๐ yourself.โ Those words are expected to be at the heart of the defenseโs argument that she was not criminally responsible due to postpartum psychosis.
The condition, which affects only one to two women out of every 1,000 births, can cause hallucinations, paranoia, and delusions. Experts say mothers suffering from it may believe they are protecting their childrenโeven from damnation.
On January 24, 2023, police say Clancy sent her husband Patrick out on errands, then allegedly strangled the three children inside their home. She then jumped from a second-story window, leaving her paralyzed from the waist down.
At the time, Clancy had reportedly been receiving psychiatric treatment for months after her mental health spiraled following the birth of her youngest. She was prescribed multiple medications and even admitted herself to a hospital, but the killings happened just 19 days after she was discharged.
If convicted of murder, she faces life in prison without parole. If found not guilty by reason of lack of criminal responsibility, she would be committed to a state psychiatric facility.
Legal analyst Elyse Hershon said the trial will likely hinge on whether jurors believe Clancy understood what she was doing. โBecause these actions are incomprehensible and the outcome so horrific, people tend to want to hold someone responsible,โ she noted.
The case has drawn comparisons to Andrea Yates, the Texas mother who drowned her five children in 2001. Yates was initially convicted, but later found not guilty by reason of insanity after being diagnosed with postpartum psychosis. Another Texas case, Dena Schlosser, also ended with an insanity verdict after she killed her infant daughter.
Both Clancy and her ex-husband have filed separate lawsuits, alleging her doctors failed to properly diagnose or treat her condition before the tragedy.
