A mother and her boyfriend have been found guilty of murdering her two-year-old daughter, after a trial revealed the little girl suffered a catastrophic head injury and months of alleged 𝓪𝓫𝓾𝓼𝓮 before her death.
Isabelle Welsh was discovered lifeless at the bottom of the stairs at the home she shared with her mom, 26-year-old Alexandra Walker, in Thornaby, Teesside, last September.
During the trial at Teesside Crown Court, both Walker and 22-year-old Harrison Simpson pleaded not guilty to murder, as well as charges of allowing the death of a child, sexual assault, and child cruelty.
But after nearly seven hours of deliberation, the jury came back with a unanimous guilty verdict for Simpson and a majority 11-to-1 conviction for Walker on the murder charge.
The pair were also convicted of child cruelty. Simpson was additionally found guilty of sexually assaulting the toddler, while Walker was cleared of that specific charge.
According to court testimony, Isabelle’s body was reportedly covered in bruises, particularly on her head, neck, abdomen, back, and genital area.
Prosecutor Richard Wright KC told the court that Isabelle’s death was not from a natural illness. Instead, he said, someone inflicted a massive head injury shortly before her collapse, fracturing her skull and causing brain damage that stopped her heart.
Court documents revealed that the couple had only been dating for about three months before Simpson became a regular presence in Isabelle’s life. The relationship, described as “unhealthy” by the prosecution, reportedly involved alcohol and 𝒹𝓇𝓊𝑔 use, which led to a decline in the little girl’s care and regular violence at home.
Judge Ms Justice Norton thanked the jury for their work on what she called a “difficult” case. Sentencing is scheduled for Thursday morning.
