Incredible moment mother buffalo drives fourteen lions away after they kill her calf so that she and her herd can come to mourn their little relative

This buffalo shows just how fierce a mother’s love can be – as she fought off 14 lions who were devouring her calf.

The distraught parent had to watch as the lions brought down her baby, but rather than turning to run, she charged back to see them off in Kruger National Park, South Africa.

As the hungry predators repeatedly tried to reach their kill, the mother drove them back again and again.

She was then joined by four members of her heard to mourn the calf by licking and cleaning it.

Only after nearly an hour did the buffalo finish her goodbyes to her baby, plodding sadly away as the lions closed in.

The touching scene was captured on camera by South African retail store manager Paul Charnley from Krugersdorp, Gauteng.

Paul, 46, said: ‘I was with a good friend of mine, Derrick Robb, and we watched this go on for a good 45 minutes.

‘The lions took down the baby buffalo but its mother refused to give up on her baby.

‘She chased the lions away multiple times and then was joined by four others to say goodbye to her calf while the lions circled.

‘Eventually the mum gave up and the 14 lions had their feast.’
