A former college swim star is at the center of a 𝓈𝒽𝓸𝒸𝓀𝒾𝓃𝑔 Hawaii resort attack, with authorities alleging he stripped down and used a large water bottle in a deadly confrontation that left a security guard dead.
Legend Storer, 20, once a standout athlete at Concordia University Irvine in California, now faces murder charges after the incident at the Sands of Kahana resort in Maui on August 7, according to court documents.
Surveillance video reportedly shows Storer, completely naked, making his way to the security guard’s office around 1:45 a.m. that morning.
The victim, Michael Dyer, was a 63-year-old security guard who was reportedly on his lunch break, eating a cheeseburger inside his office, when the attack happened.
“He was a great person and he was just in his office having a cheeseburger on his lunch break. And he had a wife that’s a waitress at Leilani’s. It’s horrible,” Dyer’s coworker Bell Hill told local media.
According to police, Storer allegedly used a five-gallon water bottle as a weapon during the assault, then fled the resort without being seen.
Officers later found Storer after responding to reports of a naked man wandering through a nearby neighborhood, roughly two hours after the attack.
Residents described hearing someone yelling intensely in the early morning hours.
One neighbor, Gina Lombardi, recalled: “I heard a man screaming like Jesus stuff. ‘Jesus loves you. Jesus is me.
I am Jesus.’ Really crazy and over and over and over. He probably screamed it like 15 times.”
Storer was reportedly covered in abrasions when he was taken to a hospital for evaluation.
Police first discovered Dyer’s body around 5:30 a. m. after receiving a call about an unresponsive person at the resort.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities say they only connected Storer to the killing after reviewing security footage from the building.
Storer has been charged with second-degree murder, burglary with a dangerous instrument, and indecent exposure, according to court records. He pleaded not guilty during his court appearance Friday.
The judge denied bail, stating, “At this time, I can’t think of any combination of conditions that would reasonably ensure the appearance of the defendant or ensure the safety of the community.”
Storer is currently being held at the Maui Community Correctional Center.
He attended Concordia University Irvine for one year before transferring to the University of Hawaii. His athletic biography notes he was a two-time Maui Interscholastic champion while attending Maui Prep.
Under a 2021 Hawaii law, the charges could become more serious because the victim was over 60, making him a kupuna under state protections.
