The admission came during a federal court appearance in Manhattan, where Mangione pleaded guilty to the December 2024 killing of Brian Thompson. His defense team immediately signaled they plan to argue that this plea prevents a state murder trial under double jeopardy laws.
The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office fired back, saying they’ve been preparing for a state trial since last year and are ready to fight any double jeopardy claims. “We are encouraged that Mr. Thompson’s family received a measure of accountability today,” the DA’s statement read, while vowing to continue seeking justice.
