Tragedy has struck the academic world as Dr. Jason Arday, the youngest Black professor ever appointed at Cambridge University, has been found dead at his home in south London at just 41 years old.
His family is shattered, releasing a heartbreaking statement through his publisher that describes him as an “amazing father, partner, brother, uncle and son.” They say they are “in shock” and revealed that Dr. Arday had faced “sustained 𝓪𝓫𝓾𝓼𝓮” ever since making history at Cambridge in 2023.
Police were called to a property in Battersea around 3:12 p. m. on Friday after the London Ambulance Service reported a man unresponsive.
He was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities say the death is being treated as unexpected but not suspicious.
The news comes just weeks after Dr. Arday resigned from his post as professor of sociology of education. He stepped down on August 5, hours after Cambridge announced it was launching an investigation into his appointment and tenure.
That probe reportedly stemmed from allegations that his PhD thesis contained passages matching or nearly matching another student’s work. Dr. Arday denied the claims, attributing the similarities to his autism, which he said causes him to absorb information through mimicry.
He also faced scrutiny over a list of personal achievements, including claims that he ran 600 miles in six days and raised millions for charity. He later admitted the run actually took 12 days and that the fundraising was done with a group of about 100 others.
In his resignation letter, Dr. Arday said the “only way to bring this chapter to an end is to step away.” He told The Times he was “accountable for the mistakes” but called the public attacks “totally unacceptable.”
Cambridge’s vice-chancellor, Professor Deborah Prentice, said she is “desperately saddened” by his death. Education Secretary Lucy Powell also expressed being “deeply shocked and saddened.”
As his family grieves and the university community reels, one question lingers: what really drove a rising star to such a devastating end?
