In a heartbreaking turn of events, Claire Lomas, a trailblazing campaigner who made history as the first person to complete a marathon in a bionic suit, tragically lost her life following a microlight crash while filming for an Apple TV series. The 44-year-old’s journey ended in a devastating accident on July 15, 2024, in Jordan, as an inquest revealed.
Claire, who had been paralyzed from the chest down due to a horse-riding accident, was attempting to land her microlight when she veered off course and struck a large rock. Despite her remarkable spirit and determination, she suffered severe injuries and succumbed to complications in the hospital more than five weeks later.
The inquest detailed that Claire was in the Middle East to film an episode for a series focused on athletes undertaking various challenges. Lina Zilinskaite, a senior producer with Atlantic Productions, expressed that Claire was thrilled to be part of the project, showcasing her enthusiasm for the opportunity.

Having obtained her microlight flying license a few years prior, Claire was well-prepared for the adventure. However, the production team was aware that she required assistance due to her paraplegia. On the day of the crash, conditions were reportedly normal, with light winds, but a decision had been made to cancel a previous flight due to stronger gusts.
Witnesses described the moment of the accident, with Lina recalling the sound of the impact as Claire veered off the runway. After spending weeks in critical condition, Claire was eager to return home to her family but tragically developed an infection that led to her rapid decline.
Claire’s inspiring journey began when she suffered life-altering injuries during the Osberton Horse Trials in Nottinghamshire, where she broke her neck, back, and ribs. Her determination shone through when she completed the London Marathon in 2012 using a bionic suit, raising significant funds for spinal research. An accomplished motivational speaker and a qualified pilot, Claire was honored with an MBE in 2017 for her contributions.
As the inquest continues, the community mourns the loss of a remarkable individual whose legacy of courage and perseverance will not be forgotten. How will Claire’s story inspire others to overcome their own challenges?
