In a tragic turn of events that no parent ever wants to face, the family of a 6-year-old girl from New Jersey is taking legal action against a badminton racket manufacturer after their daughter suffered a fatal injury during a family vacation. Lucy Morgan’s untimely death has left her loved ones reeling from heartbreak.
The incident occurred in June 2024 while Lucy was enjoying a lakeside getaway in Maine with her older brother. As they played badminton, the aluminum shaft of the racket unexpectedly detached from its wooden handle, striking Lucy in the head and causing a severe injury. The cheerful little girl, known for her bubbly personality, was rushed to the hospital but tragically passed away four days later.
In response to this devastating loss, the Morgan family filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Franklin Sports, the Massachusetts-based company responsible for the faulty racket. The legal documents allege that the product was defective, lacking sufficient adhesive to secure the metal shaft, which ultimately turned it into a dangerous projectile. The lawsuit also claims that Franklin Sports failed to adequately inform consumers about the potential hazards associated with their product.
Charles P. Hehmeyer, the family’s attorney, described the incident as âa parentâs worst nightmareâ and expressed their determination to seek justice for Lucy. He emphasized the need for accountability, stating, “We want to ensure these rackets are manufactured in a way where this type of tragedy never occurs again.”
Hehmeyer also pointed out that a previous incident involving a child in New York, who reportedly lost an eye due to a similar racket, raised concerns about the company’s safety measures.
The lawsuit seeks compensation for various damages, including funeral costs, emotional distress, and the profound loss of companionship and comfort that Lucy’s family now faces.
On that fateful day, the Morgan family was enjoying their last lunch together at their rental home when Lucy’s father, Jesse Morgan, a pastor, heard a chilling scream from outside. In a heartfelt blog post titled âCalamity Strikes,â he recounted the horror of the accident, revealing that a sharp piece of the broken racket had penetrated Lucy’s skull while she was sitting nearby.
Emergency services quickly transported Lucy to a local hospital, and she was later airlifted to Maine Medical Center in Portland. While doctors managed to revive her, Lucy had lost all brain function and the ability to breathe independently. Sadly, she succumbed to her injuries shortly thereafter.
As the family navigates this unimaginable tragedy, Franklin Sports has yet to respond to requests for comment. The community is left to wonder: what changes will come from this heartbreaking incident to ensure the safety of children in the future?
