A chilling incident unfolded in North Carolina when a 12-year-old girl was reportedly kidnapped during a sleepover at a friend’s house. The girl was allegedly taken by her friend’s uncle, Daniel Gear, who forced her into the woods before she courageously escaped and was rescued by a good Samaritan.
The harrowing event took place in Lillington, a small town located about 40 miles southwest of Raleigh. On a seemingly ordinary Sunday, the girl was awakened by Gear, 38, who is accused of subjecting her to a terrifying ordeal. Sources indicate that he compelled her into his truck, driving towards a secluded area where he allegedly made her exit the vehicle.
The girl found her chance to escape when Gear parked behind a Department of Motor Vehicles office in Erwin, approximately 11 miles from her friend’s home. Remarkably, the DMV was closed that day, providing a rare opportunity for her to flee.
As she emerged from the woods, a motorist named Jennifer Maxwell spotted her running down the embankment along US Highway 421. Maxwell, a mother of three, described the girl as shoeless and covered in scratches. “She kind of just dropped in the ditch and was just crying hysterically,” Maxwell recalled.
When she asked if the girl was okay, the response was heart-wrenching: “No, I’ve been kidnapped.”
According to Maxwell, the girl explained that Gear had been physically aggressive, pushing her and forcing her to walk for hours. “She was very scratched up, like her legs had lines all over them,” Maxwell noted, suggesting the girl had traversed through thick brush or briars.
Maxwell took the girl to a local police station to report the incident, humbly dismissing her role as a Good Samaritan. “I just thank God that I could be where I was,” she expressed, reflecting on the gravity of the situation. “And God knows if that girl didn’t get away, what would have happened.”
Following a seven-hour search involving drones and K9 units, Gear was apprehended around 8:15 p. m. that same day.
Authorities had warned that he was armed and dangerous. He now faces serious charges, including first-degree kidnapping and assault, and made his initial court appearance on Monday. A judge has set his bond at a staggering $2.
5 million, with his next court date scheduled for September 1.
Local residents expressed their shock and concern, revealing that they didn’t know much about Gear, who reportedly worked from home and rarely left his house. “He never really came out of the house,” neighbor Justin Powers shared.
As the community grapples with the aftermath of this unsettling event, many are left wondering: how can we better protect our children in an increasingly unpredictable world?
