An Ohio mother is grappling with unimaginable grief after her son’s tragic death was compounded by a 𝓈𝒽𝓸𝒸𝓀𝒾𝓃𝑔 revelation: his organs were removed without her consent. Andrea Mauk, 42, returned from a trip to Costa Rica to learn that her 18-year-old son, Damon, had become a victim of a harrowing medical procedure she never approved.
Damon, a recent high school graduate who was preparing for his real estate license, lost his life in a car accident on June 24, 2023, when his vehicle veered off a rural road in Lucas, Ohio, and collided with a tree. Mauk was thousands of miles away when she received the devastating news from her parents, a moment she describes as so traumatic that it required sedation to cope.
Despite being listed as Damon’s primary emergency contact, Mauk claims she was never informed by the hospital about the decisions being made regarding her son’s body. Reports indicate that consent for organ and tissue donation was obtained from Damon’s biological father, a man Mauk says played a minimal role in their son’s life. This has left her feeling utterly powerless at a time when she needed to be involved the most.
“I was completely devastated,” Mauk shared. “I couldn’t even bear to look at him after they had taken pieces of his body. They stole my son’s eyes.
I didn’t want to remember Damon like that.”
The heart-wrenching details continued to unfold as Mauk learned that parts of Damon’s body, including his eyes, skin, heart valves, and ligaments, were removed and sent for research purposes, with some reportedly even going to Argentina. “I loved Damon very deeply,” she reflected, emphasizing their close bond. “A call to me was all I wanted.
Decisions I didn’t get to take part in were made.”
Determined to seek justice for her son, Mauk has taken her grief and transformed it into a mission for change. She has reached out to lawmakers and testified before the Ohio Senate, advocating for what she calls “Damon’s Law,” aimed at improving hospital protocols surrounding tissue donations. Mauk believes the current laws are insufficient and have led to her being sidelined during a profoundly personal crisis.
“I believe in organ donation,” she asserted. “This is not about ending the gift of life.” Her fight for reform comes at a time when the federal government is scrutinizing the organ procurement system, following reports of troubling practices within major organizations.
On July 21, the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services announced a significant initiative to reform the organ transplant system, aiming to establish clear guidelines for donor eligibility.
This move follows investigations that uncovered disturbing practices, including questionable consent and inadequate assessments of potential donors.
As Mauk continues her advocacy, she reflects on the dignity her son deserved in death. “Damon deserved to have dignity in death,” she said, signing every appeal with the heartfelt note, “Forever Damon’s mother.”
