Anthony Joshua’s mother discusses why she doesn’t attend her son’s fights in front of the world title defense

The world heavyweight champion faces Carlos Takam at Cardiff at the end of this month after Kubrat Pulev pulled out injured.

Anthony Joshua’s mum has explained why she doesn’t watch her world heavyweight champion son’s fights.

AJ defeated Wladimir Klitschko in a thrilling contest in front of 90,000 people to unify the heavyweight titles.

But his mother Yeta Odusanya refuses to watch and has revealed how she arranged a surprise party for AJ ahead of the Wembley showdown.

“Nobody wants to see their son in a fight,” Odusanya said on the BBC One documentary Anthony Joshua: The Fight of My Life. “I’ve only ever been to two.

“It’s too emotional and nerve-wracking. As a Mum, you feel for your child.

“He’s been working hard, training hard for the big event and we thought it would be good to do a little something for him because he doesn’t ask us for anything.

“He’s a blessing to the family and an inspiration to the younger ones.”

Joshua said: “My Mum didn’t really understand what boxing was about but what she does know is that it has taught me a lot.”
