In a heartbreaking and chilling case, a mother has been convicted for the tragic killing of her 11-month-old son, reportedly believing it was the only way to prevent his father from gaining custody. Madeline Veronique Daly, 36, took her son, Basil Stoner, across state lines and fatally shot him in the face inside an RV in New Mexico.
Authorities were alerted to the situation after Daly violated a court order by kidnapping her son from Wyoming. The father had been granted emergency custody, and the last time he saw Basil was on September 28. On December 23, law enforcement tracked Daly to an RV park near Silver City after she applied for a job, which revealed an outstanding arrest warrant.
As officers surrounded the RV, they heard a gunshot and rushed inside, only to find the devastating scene. Daly had used a 9mm handgun to take her son’s life. In the aftermath, she reportedly told investigators that she believed she was protecting Basil, claiming the act was “worth it” to keep him away from his father and other relatives.
According to court documents, Daly expressed concerns about her son’s safety, alleging that he would have faced danger if he returned to his father. She also claimed that the father had never been involved in Basil’s life.
