Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones list riverfront mansion near New York city for $12 million as she says it’s ‘the right time to sell’ after their kids moved out

Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones are putting their gorgeous 1920s-era mansion in New York’s Westchester County up for sale.

The 79-year-old Wall Street actor and the 54-year-old Chicago star are listing the riverfront property for $12 million, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The potential sale could net the acting couple a $7.5 million payday, as Zeta-Jones bought the home in 2019 for only $4.5 million, public records indicated.

The home, which is located in the tony village of Irvington, New York — only about 20 miles away from the Big Apple — boasts an impressive 12 acres running along the Hudson River, according to their Compass listing agent David Turner.

While speaking to the paper, Zeta-Jones shared that she and her husband were looking to spend more time elsewhere now that their adult children had moved out of the house.

Michael and Catherine share their son Dylan, 23, and their daughter Carys, 21, while the China Syndrome actor also has an older son, 45-year-old Cameron Douglas, from his first marriage to Diandra Morrell.

They were married from 1977 until splitting in 1995, though their divorce was not finalized until 2000.

‘When I purchased our Irvington home I knew our family would share many happy times here, and we have!’ Zeta-Jones gushed in a statement. ‘Now that both our son and daughter have left the nest it seems like the right time to sell.’

She added that her acting work had recently been taking her to Europe more often, and she and Michael expected to be in the US less often.

‘Michael and I plan to spend more time in Bermuda and Europe,’ she said.

The A-list couple’s mansion has an illustrious past, as the land was once owned by the Matthiessen family of sugar merchants, according to the book Irvington (Then And Now) by Anne Marie Leone and Judith Doolin Spikes, via the Wall Street Journal.

In 1902, Conrad Matthiessen bought a neighboring 50-acre estate owned by the then-deceased Charles Lewis Tiffany, the founder of the iconic jewelry company Tiffany & Co., and the current property that Douglas and Zeta-Jones own was later carved out from those larger estates.

Stunning images provided by Compass realtor David Turner show that the home’s new owners will have plenty of green lawn to gaze upon, as there are around 130ft of frontage between the house and the river.

The home, which is in a Georgian style, was built in the 1920s and features an impressive 12,000 square feet of space and an elegant brick and stone exterior.

Visitors who drive up to the estate on its secluded circular driveway will come upon a series of elegant white columns decorating the grand front entrance.

Turner, the listing agent, noted that Douglas and Zeta-Jones had modernized the home with considerably renovations, though he stressed that they were careful to maintain the historical character of the mansion.

‘There’s a blend of formal and informal rooms,’ he explained. ‘There’s a family room next to the kitchen, which many of these old mansions don’t have.’

Another enticing aspect of the mansion is that it is move-in ready, which Turner said is a rarity among prewar mansions of the area.

It has an ideal location with plenty of privacy thanks to the woods and river surrounding it, but the mansion is also just minutes from downtown Irvington, where the new owners can drop by shops and restaurants.

There’s also a train in town that goes into Manhattan whenever they want a quick trip into the city.

According to the Journal, the Oscar-winning couple previously lived nearby in the celebrity hotspot Bedford.

Zeta-Jones made a significant profit on that home, after purchasing it for $11.25 million in 2014 and selling for $20.5 million.

In recent years, the Falling Down actor put the couple’s home in Manhattan’s Central Park West on sale for $21.5 million, though it was later taken off the market.

The home is currently the most expensive estate on sale in Irvington, according to Turner.

He added that a 214-acre estate located in nearby Bedford was bought for $30.674 million earlier in 2014, and he noted that he previously sold the nearby estate of the late David Rockefeller for a whopping $33 million, which he boasted was a record sale price for a home in Westchester County.

The lovebirds began their relationship in early 1999, before tying the knot in November of 2000.

They had a brief split in 2013, when they were seen to be living apart, but the couple had reunited by later that year, and they have been going strong ever since.
