He’s been applauded for performing his own death-defying stunts in his Hollywood film roles.
But now, actor Tom Cruise has revealed he even learned how to do his own hair and makeup while filming his latest blockbuster Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning.
Speaking to entertainment reporter Justin Hill at the press junket for the action film, the 61-year-old’s co-star Hayley Atwell recalled Cruise had set out to do his own styling at times while crew members were often apart while production began during the Covid pandemic.
‘There was, at one point, I think that he was doing his own hair and makeup because we were in the middle of the pandemic,’ she explained.
‘He was moving massive props just trying to help out to save time.’
Hill was impressed with Cruise’s efforts and applauded him at Sydney’s red carpet premiere, where the actor recalled teasing the hair and makeup department via Zoom about cutting his own locks.
‘I took the scissors out because I was going to cut my hair,’ the Golden Globe winner said.
‘[The hairdresser] said, “Stop, stop, stop!”. I said, “Look, there’s this little part right here.” I started cutting my hair… She was having a heart attack.’
Cruise added he was only having ‘a bit of fun’ and ‘trying to make everyone laugh’ on set.
The Hollywood star is still doing his own crazy stunts for his films after turning 61 years old in Sydney on Monday.
In his seventh Mission Impossible movie, Cruise performed his most death-defying stunt yet.
Paramount Pictures released a 10-minute video about how the wild stunt was possible, which saw the Hollywood actor drive a motorbike off the side of a cliff in Norway.
In the jaw-dropping clip, Cruise released himself from the motorbike and free-falls for several seconds before pulling a parachute.
Speaking to 9Honey Celebrity on the red carpet of the movie’s Australian premiere, Cruise said there was so much going through his mind while filming this scene, which was shot on the first day of filming.
‘I was thinking of performance, because, you see me at the beginning, I have to act, but I’m also thinking about the helicopter that’s going down, the speed that I have to travel down that ramp,’ he said.
‘[Also] not getting blown off the ramp by a helicopter, not hitting the drone that was at the end of the ramp, not having the motorcycle hit me and destabilise me when I have a few seconds before I hit the ground, holding my position as long as I can, because if I open too soon, that’s not the shot.’
The A-lister said he then worried about opening the parachute, as he prayed that he wouldn’t hit the side of the mountain, and would be able to land safely.
Cruise stars alongside Pom Klementieff, Hayley Atwell and fan-favourite cast member Simon Pegg in the latest Mission: Impossible installment.
It is his seventh MI film and will be released in Australian theatres on July 8.
Returning to the sequel are Cruise’s usual sidekicks – veteran Hollywood names Ving Rhames, Rebecca Ferguson, and Vanessa Kirby.
