LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell addressed the media today amid escalating violence from protests sweeping across Los Angeles. Tensions erupted as demonstrators clashed with law enforcement, resulting in multiple injuries, including three officers. The Chief urgently called for peace while reaffirming the LAPD’s commitment to maintaining public safety and the constitutional right to free speech.

In the past few nights, what began as peaceful protests transformed into chaos, with demonstrators reportedly firing commercial-grade fireworks at officers and throwing dangerous projectiles, including rocks and concrete. McDonnell condemned the violence, emphasizing that attacks on law enforcement and innocent citizens would trigger a swift response.

Clarifying misconceptions, McDonnell refuted claims that the LAPD delayed its response to federal assistance requests. He stated that the department was not informed in advance about federal operations in the area, affecting their readiness. When called, LAPD responded within 38 minutes despite challenging conditions, including traffic and crowd density.

With rising anxiety in immigrant communities, McDonnell reiterated that the LAPD does not collaborate with ICE on immigration enforcement, urging residents to feel safe reporting crimes without fear of deportation. As violence escalates, the department is evaluating potential measures, including a curfew, to regain control.

“This has gotten out of control,” McDonnell asserted, noting the increased danger posed to officers and the public. The LAPD is actively working to apprehend those responsible for the violent outbursts, with arrests already underway. The situation remains fluid, and authorities are committed to restoring order amid the unrest.

As Los Angeles grapples with these turbulent protests, the LAPD’s commitment to transparency and accountability remains paramount in their efforts to protect the community. The public is urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity as law enforcement intensifies its efforts to ensure safety for all.
